Show Youre Really Busy , Huh? But Are You Also Getting Something Done? When Roger L. Kirkham discusses his favorite professional topic and the management of time he sets a good example: his sentences are short and to the point, A common denominator among people who effectively use their time is consistency in doing the most important tasks first, he says. his lectures uncluttered with excess words. . The theme of his message is that being busy isnt the same as getting results." He's delivered It "Nearly everyone makes To Do lists, either mentally or in writing form. Effectively focusing on results, however, requires that before hundreds of audiences large and small, locally and nationwide, and representing the corporate world, government agencies and even the military. In the search of greater productivity, the choice is between efficiency and effectiveness, says Kirkham, and he aligns himself with the latter as the better of two commendable choices. "Efficiency focuses on the method, effect iveness on the output, he says. Efficiency focuses on cost, effectiveness on value. Efficiency worries alrout how time is spent, effectiveness about how time is invested." Kirkham is president of American Training Alli- ance, a technical management training and consulting firm in Salt Lake City. He's also a licensed professional engineering and adjunct professor of industrial engineering at the University of Utah. As part of his management training course, titled, Getting Results Through People, he tells enrollees that many people attempt to boost their productivity by increasing their efficiency when, in fact, the biggest gains are made by becoming more effective. While both are important, he adds, "what people are being paid for is results not for trying hard, not for working fast, not for being busy. People can very efficiently fill their day with trivial tasks. Being busy, however, isnt the same as getting results. Hell never have to guess what the boss means by doing a good job.' Supervisors and employees of the Data Automation Branch at Hill Air Force Base near Ogden, Utah, are among those who have taken training from Kirkham. At the end of their training, Kirkham recalls, the Hill employees expressed greater willingness to be giving priority to their held accountable in their activities.
