Dec. 10, starting at 10 oclock A very fine and busy day has been planned. Christmas gifts will top the list of activities. Christmas ornaments, candles, ceramics, arrangements, aprons, will be made. Also, there will be quilting and hand sewing. Luncheon will be served at 8TH WARD EIEHKt .V7 noon. The ally," lesson, will be Haines. Living Economic- given by Evelyn Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the day. There will be a lady to watch the children. Approximately 40,000 Americans and visiting foreign sailors were on hand in the Norfolk, Va., area for the first Navy International Fleet Review to be held in 50 years. REVISING THE MAIL RATES Top officials of the post office department are again advocating higher mail rates. For instance. Hyde Gillette, an assistant postmaster general, speaking in Portland, Oregon, said that the departments deficit will reach $700 million this year. He approved a bill which has passed the house and will be considered by the Senate next session. Under it, there would be a one cent increase in s letter postage; a 60 per cent increase in second-clas- s mail r rates over a period; a 50 per cent increase in third-clas- s r rates over a period, and a one-ccincrease in air mail postage. There is certainly plenty of evidence that post office charges should be revised upward, whatever the precise percentages. And this reform should not stop with the regular mail services. Parcel post which falls into the fourth-clas- s mail classification has also been a heavy and consistent producer of deficits. Moreover, the argument that the mails serve a basic public need in the fields of information, education and general enlightenment, and htnee should not necessarily be sel Cc.Uiiriy cannot logically be applied to parcel post. It is purely a commercial package carrying service, operating in competition with package - carrying services provided by private enterprise. If it went completely out of business tomorrow, private eneffiterprise would do the job ciently, swiftly, and at a fair price. And private enterprise pays its own way and pays taxes to chuck-fu- ll of LARGE, ORANGES for: Gifts, heavy with juicy SUNK1ST Cenler-Piector delicious s, ealing, also.
