Show JOHN E BROWN PIONEER PASSES john E brown for years one of the leading stockmen stoc kmen ranchers and businessmen of southeastern utah and long a prominent figure in the public affairs of moab and grand county passed away early sunday morning at bis home on east orchard mesa near grand junction where he had resided j for about three years the body was brought back to the old home at moab and interment took place yesterday at the local cemetery mr brown had been ill for about a bear he was injured in lifting a heavy object and death resulted from hardening of the arteries as a result of the injury for nearly 50 years john E brown was prominently identified with the up building and development of southeastern utah he was a pioneer in the true sense of the word and a man to progress and enterprise were a religion news of his death was received with sincere regret throughout southeastern utah funeral services were held from the D S chapel wednesday forenoon and were attended by a large crowd of sorrowing friends there were many beautiful floral offerings which attested the esteem in which mr brown was held bishop W D Ha nimond presided at the services and the opening num ler was a hymn by the choir I 1 need thee every hour howard W bats ley offered the invocation A duet lead me gently home was sung by V P walker and L L taylor D A johnson a lifetime friend of mr brown was the first speaker he praised the many fine traits of character of the departed who had always given his best efforts to make his town and county a better place in which to live A solo one sweetly solemn thought was rendered by mrs mary gordon R dark paid a glowing tribute to the life and works of mr brown U the deceased was a builder a man who stood for progress and good felp howship one can now the speaker said find substantial evidence of john browns life in southeastern utah he well and left monuments to g his enterprise that will long endure he was continually doing things tor his community and such a man will surely receive a just reward mr dark stated bishop W D hammond was the j concluding speaker talking along scriptural lines he stressed the certainty of a life beyond the grave and offered comforting words to the bereaved relatives the choir sang abide with me followed by the by L christensen Chrls at the cemetery the choir sang god be avith you and the dedicatory prayer offered by D A johnson john E brown was lworn on jan 11 1861 at draper utah As a very young man about the year 1880 he came to southeastern utah as a rider lor the hudson cattle outfit about the year 1885 he went to indian creek residing there until 1893 operating a large cattle ranch in 1893 he came to moab residing here for a time and then moved to the sinbad country in the north la sal mountains where for 15 years are more he was in the cattle business about the year 1906 he sold b sinbad outfit and came with his willy to moab residing here until in that year the family moved to loaia later going to orchard mesa bere they now reside brown was united in marriage to miss pannie ray at moab in 1885 a union which existed tor 45 years affo daughters were bom to the union one daughter and the widow surviving him during his residence in moab mr rown served as a county of grand county and in this capac y played an important part in funds for a bridge across the colorado river mr brown purchased marge ranch in lower moab valley and by his great energy improved it until it became one of the show places of the anty he was an active and vig ous personality a great horseman d a stockman of outstanding ability mr brown always took an active part i rodeos and fairs throughout the J mountain country he was very J interested in these enterprises and en sed in raising fine horses along with als cattle business he had often of at the rodeo and fair events id was known throughout a wide us for these activities during his long residence at moab mr brown took an active part in busl affairs and was a director in a maber of local companies he also crated the thompsons Thomp sons mall line for wal I 1 ears fr brown Is survived by his wid mrs pannie brown a daughter j veva hughes of east orchid and three grandchildren miss adrian dubois of salt lake city lewis dubois of california and lloyd utah all of the dubois of funeral except the were here for family to lewis dubols who was unable make tho trip from california |
