Show OLD WASH WELL KNOWN INDIAN DIES IN william wash ute indian well known at moab died in the uintah basin last week old wash as he was commonly known was an annual visitor in moab for many years passing through here on his way to and from the southern ute reservation he was one of the best known and most respected totes the following account of his death appeared in the roosevelt standard of last week william wash one of the best known indians of the uintah ouray agency and highly respected by whites and indians was laid to rest in the cemetery near randlett on tuesday his demise followed an illness of several months for a time he was in the ft duchesne hospital receiving the best of medical attention but he failed to overcome the ravages of the illness he Is survived by his wife and two sons william wash was a full blood a member of the uintah division of the ute confederation and was bom in utah about 70 years ago the uintah indians were always friendly toward the whites resisting the temptation to go on the war path and eschewing outlawry and banditry while the departed leader was not one of the hereditary chiefs of his people yet he exerted so great an influence over his people in leading them by his example to the trails of farming and to the livestock industry that he was considered as one of the best friends and supporters of men who held the post of superintendent of the agency since ts establishment the utes the white river indians and the members of his own band the uintah frequently sought his counsel in matters affecting them as varying conditions arose and never did the stalwart leader fail to advise them and never was his advice other than for the best interests of his fellow red men he was the foremost livestock man among his people and besides was an industrious tanner for many years he was an employee of the rov emment and it was with sincere regret that the officials parted with h from the inception of the atah basin industrial du convention Conven tio the day of his death he was n ber of the indian committee wa was in charge of the activities r deans during the sessions of ta unique annual assembly of tb ale of the uintah basin at r besne at he corsaw his early passing Is evidenced ced by a remark he made while sitting in a car at ouray watching the bear dance which closed april 1 to one of his friends he remarked this Is the list tune that I 1 am seeing this dance of my people the passing of william wash Is mourned by his tribesmen and by his white neighbors and friends all who anew him were his friends and toes he had none |
