The JV ladies lined up next to take the challenge of this interesting course. Again, inexperience is the key word for this group of young women. Not until this year had any 376-481- 1 of these young runners ever competed. But running with Red Devil pride, these ladies hung in tough. Because the freshmen ran in their respective race, Moab only had 2 runners in the mens JV race. Mark Watson, recovering from a broken hand during Homecoming, improved his seasons best with a time of 21:01.9. Wade Shumway completed the run in 23:16.1. Moabs one-tw- o punch in the ladies Varsity is Lora Lee and Faye Bylilly. Lee, the current region champ, finished her run in 22.29.0. Bylilly, first-yea- r runner, is helping fill an important spot in this years team with a finish of 24:26.9. Moab coaches are convinced there is enough time for these ladies to con- - ships, Watson then went on to play basketball at Dixie College in St. George. After two successful years at Dixie she transferred to Illinois Central College where 6he played and helped win the 1998 National Junior College Championship. Watson was an assistant coach for the girls program last season. This is her first head coaching job. She will be assisted by Terry Flynn. Flynn has retired from coaching and teaching in Indiana and has just recently moved to Moab. Tony Chen lives a reasonably ordinary life in Salt Lake City with one exception. Two months ago he was the top ranked chess player in the country. Two weeks ago he participated in the Four Corners Team Chess Championships, held in Moab at the MARC, where he eight-year-ol- d demolished his adult competition. This is the first adult tournament Chen has won outright, scoring against older and more experienced competition, including a major upset victory against Moabs top player, Damian Nash. In two previous encounters with Nash, Chen had emerged with a draw and a lose by the narrowest possible margin. This time he weathered an all-oattack by Nash and hung on tenaciously until the endgame when his extra piece easily made the dif4-- 0 ut ference. Chen led his family team, the overFire Dragons, to a second-plac- e all victory and the trophy for the best family team. His father, Zhidong Chen, finished defeating the number one and three ranked players in the tournament, and losing old sister, only to Nash. His Janice Chen, also one of the players in the country in her 0, 11-ye- ar ed age category, finished with 2.5 points. y a Sj Red Devil runners discuss cross-countr- y tinue improving and turn in their seasons best performance by the time of region competition.
