"60 Years of ESA" Deep in the Heart of Texas was celebrated July 3 with 1196 attending. The kick off was a sixty mile bike ride ending at the Southfork Ranch which brought in contributions of over $100,000 for St Jude's Children Research Center. The bike riders consisted of members and flags from every state including Australia and Hawaii. Seventeen ESA sisters, 3 guest and 3 husbands from Utah were in attendance: from Moab was Betty Walterschied, Green River was Judy 16-2- dents of the deadlines for registering, getting absentee ballots, and voting. The deadline of most concern now is September 12, when mail-i- n registrations must be received. The last opportunity to register to vote in the primary election will be September 22, when registration agents will register voters in the voter districts. The League of Women Voters is a political organization dedicated to encouraging active citizen involvement in government. It has been in existence on the national level for almost 70 years. It is perhaps best known for its nationally televised Presidential Debates, as well as a multitude of studies of varying nature and scope. Any citizen of voting age, male, female, is welcome to attend the meetings andor join the group. The League of Women Voters meets the last Thursday night of every month at 7 p.m. in the Grand County Courthouse, and anyone interested is welcome to attend. At the next meeting on Sept. 29, the League will be discussing the Candidates' Forum being held October 26 for the November 7 election for mayor and two Moab City Council seats, as well as for the Olympics issue. Mayoral candidates answered variety of questions at forum The Moab City Primary Election was the main focus of the League of Women Voters of Grand County in a Candidates' Forum held Thursday, August 31, according to League President Mary Plumb. The Forum was taped by Jim Mattingly of Channel 6 news and will be shown on Channel 6 TV on two Wednesday evenings in September, the 13th and 27th, beginning at 7 p.m. "In keeping with League tradition, we want to be of service to the voters in providing answers to their questions. At the same time we want to be of service to the candidates, by providing a format that allows them to address their constituents in a controlled and neutral program," said League President Mary Plumb. The League invited all primary candidates for mayor to participate and were joined by (in alphabetical order) Bill Meador and Tom Stocks. Manuel Torres declined the League's invitation to participate in the program. The October 3 primary election will eliminate one of these mayoral candidates from contention in the general election on November 7. The format for the program was similar to the Candidates' Forum the League of Women Voters of Grand County has sponsored locally for the last five years, which is based on the format followed by local leagues nationwide for almost 70 years.
