Show ON INDIAN LANDS livestock owners of san juan county are to be asked to clarify their attitude relative to the plan of the united states bureau of indian affairs to acquire the diute piute strip as a part of the navajo indian reservation this much was the outcome of a conference at the state capitol monday attended by congressman don B colton governor george H dern and charles redd la sal san juan county part of the area in utah south of the san juan river Is already in the navajo reservation which also includes a large part of arizona about acres however south of the river in utah are still a part of the public domain this Is used mostly by the indians but stockmen stoc kmen say that in times of heavy snowfall or when feed is scarce the also use this strip congressman colton who introduced by request a previous bill which made this strip a part of the indian reservation has a tentative draft of a bill which the indian bureau will support and which mr redd said he thought would be satisfactory to the livestock owners this would grant the strip to the reservation but at the same time would cancel about sixty applications from indians tor segregations of considerable grazing land area north of the river all such applications that have not gone to patent are canceled under the terms of the tentative bill mr redd Is the present representative from san juan county he will be succeeded january 12 however by B D black democrat who won at the last elections mr redd not being a candidate at the polls governor dern has received a letter from mr black submitted at the request of livestock owners opposed to the granting of the strip to the indians the petition of the stockmen stoc kmen as included in mr blacks letter argued that the stockmen stoc kmen have no other place to winter their cattle than on the strip in hard winters and when feed Is scarce it Is also argued that the strip has large oil mineral and scenic resources it was arranged that mr redd will try to stage a conference of the livestock interests concerned in the near future to determine it some ground may not be reached on which they will unite for the advice of congressman colton and governor dern |
