Coach Ted Smith changed to a zone defense, and his Royals went to work at both ends of the court to shut off the Bountiful attack, and put their offensive machine in high gear. The Royals scored more points in the second half of play (48) than Bountiful did in the entire game. Jeff Scholtec d and Mark Sindle the whole Bountiful team, with 30 and 20 points respectively. Coach Ted Smith went to his bench early, and the reserves kept pouring it on. the Braves 39 to Roy 29. In the turnover department, the Royals coughed up the ball nine times and caused 17 Bountiful turnovers. Mike Nichols scored 10 points, and the rest was divided evenly among seven other players. - Roy 61 l.ajton (ii In the first four minutes of play at Layton, Friday Roy was whistled for eight foul infractions to only one against the Lancers. The Royals became gun-shand allowed a lot of unmolested Layton drives to the hoop, but won the contest By halftime the pendulum swung in favor of Roy. They did not commit another foul until after the halftime intermission, and Layton had nine. Roy trailed 16 to 18 in the first y 64-6- the Oin IB) With IQ Weber, Roy and Clearfield finished in the first half of Region One basketball. Weber beat Roy by one; Roy beat Clearfield by two and lost to Weber by three. After seven first round games and one in the second round, the standings are as follows: Weber Clfd., Roy Bountiful Skyview Layton Bonneville Viewmont in tne first half of the league schedule, Weber averaged 69.7 points per game and allowed opponents 62.6 for a 7.1 point spread. The Warriors scored 70 or more points in five of their seven games. Their highest 4 point production was in their romp over Bonneville. Roy averaged 68.3 points per game against 58.7, for a 9.6 point spread. They scored 70 plus points against four opponents, and tallied 78 points against Bonneville and Bountiful. Clearfields average per game was 67.3 to 58.9 for opponents. Point spread of the Falcons was 8.4, and they scored 76 points at Bonneville and Bountiful. In the remaining six league games, Weber plays three at home and three on the road. Roy has two road games and four at home. The Falcons play twice at home and four on the road. Weber is in the drivers seat for the league championship. The Warriors are at home in their games with number two Roy and number three Clearfield. The Falcons have the home-couadvantage in their show-dow- n with Roy, 21st February looms big in favor of and that Clearfield. Roy has only two road games in the but those two games final 6-- 2, 3-- 2-- 78-6- rt d, are at Weber and Clearfield, and that could get sticky. Nobody in Region One had better take anyone for granted. The Also-Ra- n teams are capable, on a given of upsetting any, or all three of night the league leaders. Weber is favored to win it all in Region One, but Roy and Clearfield are not out of it yet. Both are capable of beating the Warriors, and both are not out of it yet. Both are capable of beating the Warriors and both are determined to do just that. The contests of the first half, were not decided until the final minutes of play, and could easily have gone the other way. The two rematches at Webers gymnasium and the one at Clearfield should be just as close. In this column, I predicted that nobody, but nobody was going to beat the Falcons at Clearfield. That was before Weber did the job on Jam 24th. I also predicted that no one would go undefeated in Region One this season. I am going to hold on to that prediction for six more games. I believe that Clearfield or Roy, or both are capable of winning at Weber. The home court favors the Warriors, but a lot of other the home-stanfactors may off-sRoy and Clearfield may have a psychological advantage after losing at home to Weber. They should have no problem in getting up for their next games with the Warriors. The Clearfield - Roy game at Falconville should be another dog fight, but that Clearfield Home court advantage is for real. Roy will have to play its best game of the year to beat the Falcons on February 21st. 4 at halftime quarter, but led They maintained a two point bulge at the three quarter mark, and finished with a three point advantage. Roy could have and should have out the ball game away going down the stretch, but they missed on several foul shots, and a fistful of easy shots to allow the Lancers to stay within striking distance. But the Lancers also had fumble fingers and cold hands at the hoop and the game became a standoff. Finally, with 20 seconds remaining in the game, Scholtec picked up a cripple to lead by five points. The Royals wisely backed off and allowed the Lancers to score unmolested in the last six seconds of play. Jeff Scholtec led the scoring for the Royals with 18 points, while Fred Fernandes and Mark Sindle each scored 15. Mike Nichols put in 12 points for the Royal cause. Ben Bubak, Rory Dixon and Gordon Anderson scored 19, 17 and 11 points for the Layton team. Highly touted Carl Woodward was held to eight points for Layton. This wasnt one of Roys better games. The early fouls threw the Royals off stride, and caused them to change their game plan. They played a lot of zone defense in the first half to protect their big men, and gave up some cheap baskets to stay out of foul trouble. Roy entertains Skyview Friday at home. The Bob Cat - Royal series is the most lopsided rivalry in Region One. Skyview is out front about 19-going back to the mid 1960s. Roy broke the ice last year at Smithfield, but lost one at home. The Royals defeated the Bob Cats on the road in win December for their second-eve- r over Skyview. Game time is 7:30 p.m. 36-3- y 44. f I?
