The team combined for 106 points to finish behind Box Elder with 136 and Skyview with 119. Coach Carter, displeased with some of the performances over the past few weeks of dual meet wrestling, was a happy coach after the Region One Wrestling Championships were completed at Skyview. The team qualified 8 wrestlers for the state meet that is being held this week at the University of Utah. The tournament of tournaments, or the highest pinacle of competition will be staged on four mats on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The eight Royals entering the tournament ties a school record, being that eight Roy grapplers were sent to the tourney last season. The team which won four dual meets and lost two in region action finished 22nd in the state meet a year ago and will be making great strides to improve on that mark this season. last Saturday nights meet, three wrestlers claimed region titles in succession. Three more wrestlers claimed second places as they competed in the final championship rounds. Roy had one third place and one more In Roy fourth. A few more breaks and we could have given the (Box Elder) Bees a big run for their title, said Coach Carter. He was referring to the fact that his No. 1 seed, Dave Parr lost out in his bid for the region title at 112. Then of course, Roy had to compete without either of their top two heavyweights, due mostly to attitude problems. Box Elder swept to its third straight title in Region One wrestling at Skyview. The Bees scored 136 points to 119 for host Sky View. Roy finished third with 106, Weber was fourth with 87V2, Bear River had 40 V2, Bonneville 38 and Logan 22. of its Box Elder qualified all finals which wrestlers for the State will be staged at the University of Utah 12 4-- A this week. Skyview also qualified all 12 wrestlers. The Bees had five first place finishers. Rene Orosco was seeded third in the region and took third. Orosco is only a junior, seeing varied action as a sophomore with the varsity. Renes chances in state are good, but he will be competing in a very tough weight, with the favorite being Doug Higley of Clearfield. Another junior, Andy Fraga, came down from 112 on the varsity last season, to compete in the 107 bracket. He was seeded third in his weight, but career. Hunter, undefeated entering the region meet, was seeded in the No. position and heavily favored to give the Lakers their only title. Myer wrestled smarter than he would ever dream and left Hunter with his face on mat after title bout was completed. Scott Sanders may be the best ever at Roy. He has lost only one match the entire season and that defeat came by an injury when he couldnt finish the match. He was defeating the West High opponent at the time. At the Region meet last Saturday, pinned Skyviews Wayne Larsen to get into the finals. Andy went to state last season and should compete well again this year. Dave Parr let the championship slip away from him, losing 4 to Russ Campbell of Weber. The loss was extra disappointing since Parr had defeated Campbell twice before in dual matches. He went to state last season and will be anxious to make a good showing. Kay Okey was second to Brent Winward for the majority of last season. This all just added a bit of toughness to the issue as he placed fourth in one of the meets most grueling weight divisions. Kay will be wrestling the region champ from Region Four c n Thursday. The Royals then began to shine, as Phillip Myer, Scott Sanders, and Kevin Thompson all claimed region championships in succession. These three were the old gridiron heros during Roys march for the honorable Region One football trophy. They showed their strength and wit in winning those matches. There was a little pride involved in those kids. It kinda makes up for some of the other hurts, said Coach Carter. Phillip Myer beat Scott Hunter of Bonneville for the first time in his 1 5-- Scott handled Todd Williams for the top spot and a good position is the state tournament. Kevin Thompson could have very easily won the outstanding wrestler award, if one were awarded. Thompson set down Dennis Farr of Weber in the first round and pinned him solid to the mat. Kevin was elated over the win, saying, Man three years and I finally got it. It feels great. The Weber coach was stunned after the happening to his star grappler, saying, I just couldnt believe what he did to him. Roy wont be fooling around this time when state nears. For the Monday and Tuesday practices, the Royals went to Box Elder to work out with the champion Bees. -- . i ' i ' Leading prep scorers 6 WBER COUNTY CHAMPS the Roy Junior High Redskins from top left, Mario Chavez, Dale Bell, Artie Aragon, Boyd Fife, Doug Roskelly, Tom Harper, Mark Sindle, Maurie Blau, Robert Singlar, Dennis Tulane, Corry Coolohan, Wayne Hall, and Burt Rich. Coach Wolfgang Okroy and Co. won their second consecutive Weber County basketball championship, with a victory over Wahlquist last week and win over North Ogden last Tuesday. The Redskins pocketed the County football title just last fall to go along with their cage title. It was the Redskins 12th victory in a row this season, going the season's length without a defeat.
