Dear Editor: I'm writing in regard to the fetter L.E, Pearce wrote in the Sept. 2 issue of the Sun Chronicle. If Mr. Pearce and the 52 other parents want to deny their children of tho heathful benefit of walking, (I'm sure the Presidents Council on Physical Fitness will back me lip on that statement', then let them pool their finances and buy a bus, hire a driver, and pay the expense of hauling their children to school for one year. without money, and without cost to the needy. I have no organization, but am well located, and well established in this great calling, making use for the useless and will very GLADLY ACCEPT. I for one have refused to sign petitions to change the law regarding who can ride school buses. I hope other parents will think through this matter before they sign a petition that will be detrimental to the welfare of our children. 1 White, Bibles for the Needy 1719 Buckner St Shreveport, Louisiana Remodeling , T- - - V! They must anticipate customer likes and dislikes and have their prodin the ucts at the retail level when the most desired colors public is ready to buy. One such consultant b Faber Birren, who heads his own New d firm. York How does Mr. Birren pre-de--t ermine consumer color preferences? Not by whim or fanev," says With us the key Mr. Birren. word is trends. For by analyzing retail purchases in the various consumer areas from year to year, we are able to establish and to inwhat's more important terpret these trends. Consequently, we can counsel our clients on expected developments in their particular sphere." It is Mr. Birrens theory that consumer color preferences follow a' cycle that may run from 10 or 12 to as many as 25 years, depending upon the tv pc of product. "Consumer preferences in wall paint, for example." Mr. Birren points out. have gone through City-base- Faber Birren three dominant periods since World War II: the Renaissance Era from 1946 to 1952 which was distinguished as an epoch of green: the Pastel Era from 1954 to 1958 which saw beige and san dalwood continue to gain; and the 'Muted Era which took over in 1958 and has just recently started to give way to the demand for cleaner, brighter tones. How accurate are color consultants? Well, a little over a year ago, when analyzing and attempting to predict the publics paint preferences for the 1964 buying season, Mr. Birren emphasized. will be highly preferred." Largely on the strength of Mr. Birren s advice, the Du Pont Company introduced a new in both interior and exterior paint The new shade was formally introduced to the public in the House of Good Taste exhibit at the New York World's Fair, where it appeared throughout the modem house designed by Edward Durell Stone. It was named most appropriately World's Fair White. What happened? Within the brief period of 12 months, World's Fair White became the most popular color in both Lucitc wall paint and Lucite house paint. Oyster White, Du Ponts leading wall paint color for several years running, dropped to second, while ivory ranked third: beige. Pat Freestone JLJ V L. Furniture, Chests, TVs, Dinnets, Old Chairs, Etc. For a new color to displace ail favorites in a single of the-olselling season is a marketing rar ity. In this instance at least, its also a tribute to sage counsel. What about color preferences for the coming year? Let Mr. Birren explain: The as evipopularity of denced by the tremendous acceptance accorded World's Fair White --will continue. For interiors, the use of pastels a trend that got its impetus in 1954 and peaked a few years e later will dwindle. One sign here is the way appliance manufacturers are ditching yellows, pinks, and blues and turning instead to copper, chrome, and the like. "Beige -- the popularity of which closely paralleled the Pastel Era will begin to fall off. However, its demise will be long drawn out, and it will still account for enough sales volume to rank as a standard color for some time to come. The dry, warm neutrals, such as gray warmed with yellow, will begin to supplant beige for interior use. For exteriors, the bright colorful pastels, while becoming less popular inside the house, w ill continue to gam in popularity over traditional white for outside use. And homeowners will use these shades more and more to achieve distinctive, individual effects." How do clients of American Color Trends, Inc., take advantage of Mr. Birren' advice? Well, Du Pont, for example, has announced three new interior shades Blush White, Aqua Frost, and Pink Ice two new exterior house paints Winter 'Wheat and Twilight Green and a new exterior trim color called Golden Glow. If Mr. Birren comes anywhere near his 1964 performance. Blush While a reddish tint, as the name implies should challenge Oyster White fa gray tint) and World Fair White (a bciee tint). Tf it does. Mr. Birren won't be singing the blues. Appliance 18 9. 81.23 & TV A Repair Phone 823-99- children in ol WILL DO IRONING Al' Al's Auction, tf 3.
