Show May 7, 1980 Sun Chronicle, Sun Times, Ben Lomond Beacon, Clearfield Courier Prjqn 7 Dance world finds Dbiie Coggins a teacher of teachers By Keith Duncan Crowded in basements of food in stores, lined-usmall buildings, sprawling in every room of p one-roo- a converted church house and even out in open air are hundreds of seemingly dedicated young girls who yearn to learn the art of dancing. Among the most widely known and respected dance instructors, in this state or any other, is Pleasant Views Dixie Coggins, who like her colleagues, would be lost without the world of dance and these little ones that strive to understand it. Coggins, who owns and operates the Dance Shoppe in Pleasant View, and performs as a tour member with Danny Hockers Dance Caravan has been involved in dance since the early days when her mother took time to teach her and her sisters. One thing is significant in anything you do, said Dixie. If your striving for greatness, you never stop learning. While performing with the Dance Caravan last summer, I remembered again the feeling it is when you go out to perform in front of others. Now I can better appreciate my girls feelings of anxiety and sometimes frustration. I had forgotten those said Dixie. Dixies own feelings on the art of dancing were best described in this poem she created. It was later published and appeared in one of her own dance review programs. Dancing is an art of which we are all a' feelings, part. part for every part of us, no matter what we are. The person with a graceful move, for one that only likes to groove. The person whose afraid to say, Im not best, and thats O.K. The best at what I ask you dear, to leap and jump and jump 'hnd cheer? No, dancing is beyond an art because, you see, we all have parts.. To learn what part you really are.. to be the best at that by far... To know you love to move in space, no matter if you lack some grace... Dont turn your back on dancing, please, for each one achieves in different degrees If you judge yourself you will always And, someone ahead, and someone behind.. For God intended to us to be as and .special as we can be... , And so he" gave us the art of dance. .never to conquer..only to adA dif-jre- ut vance.. The only joy is on the way. The joy of making a better day! The joy of hearing not just a song, not just the words as we sing along, But the joy of seeing an inside world that the music awakens inside our heads, A field full of beauty and dance in- stead!!! Dont rob yourself young child, please see. Theres a dancer inside you, if you will set her free! By Dixie Coggins Disco did its Thing Coggins feels disco has served a fundamental purpose in getting people back to dance again. Asked whether the disco fling is on its way out, Dixie answered, Regardless of where it is going, disco did more for dancing than anything has for the past two decades. People are suddenly turning to dance again. It was just the right thing for something like disco. Right now it may be on a normal level where in the neN MOVING DIXIE COGGINS may teacher of teachers' world of dance. in be a the big beginning it was all too new and exciting, said Coggins. During the time that disco fever was at its highest, Dixie published a book entitled, A Complete Six Week Course in Disco Dance Instruction. Dixie claims her book does more than teach disco. The book could be helpful in teaching jazz teachers and many other forms of dancing, said Dixie. Also during the disco craze, Coggins, with help of Danny Hoctor, had a Stock TO SALE PRICES GOOD m record cut for disco dancing. Ultimately the two did a lot to promote the disco dance around the state of Utah. Once in a Lifetime Touring with Dance Caravan was a once in a lifetime opportunity according to Dixie, who spent six weeks with the dance teaching group that toured such cites as San Francisco, Portland, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Atlanta, Houston, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Washington, D.C. and gsER THURSDAY, MAY 8th FRIDAY, MAY 9th SATURDAY, MAY 10th New York. In the past two years, Dixies involvement with the group was merely a visit to two or three of the cities rather than the entire six week tour. In her own words, Dixie commented, Teaching and performing can be exciting and glamorous and I suppose thats what most people .would- think, especially when your traveling all around the country. But besides the glamorous part, work with the Dance Caravan was exhausting and even very tiring at times. I think the hardest part for me last summer, was not having any one I knew real well, with me. If I go again, Id like to take my husband or one of my children for a little company, said Dixie. The tour was complete in the finest sense. The dance members were always surrounded by young children who wished for an autograph or a picture taken of them with one of the , vYV"vvyvvvV. members. Part of the travel time, the caravan was accompanied by a ballet couple from Russia. The caravan did do a lot for me, but in essense, it increased my love for the art of dancing, said Dixie. ON ALL GUNS, AMMO, AND RELOADING! Dixies contribution to the Dance Caravan was significant. Besides exhibiting a ton of patience and entertainment, dance teachers and participants all over the country were privledged to witness some of the best talent in the states. Dancing is really alive, the tour made that real for me, said Dixie. ON ALL CLOTHING, SPORTING GOODS AND FOOTWEAR! ON ALL SADDLE & TACK I COGGINS Cogginettes. (I. to r.)
