At the time pf the exodus, the Hebrews were enslaved. Moses was the leader who' brought them out of bondage. In his dealings with the Pharaoh, Moses was empowered, according to the old testament, to inflict punishments on the Egyp- tians until Pharaoh had released the Hebrews. The last of these was the slaying of the first-bor- n children of the Egyptians by the angel of death, who passed over the homes of the Hebrews. Thence, the name Passover. Grode David Weaver, have been In the traditional Jewish observance of this ancient holiday, the Passover dinner, or seder is enjoyed the first night. Easter is a celebration of rebirth, and in many ways, so is Passover. It is a time of rebirth, coming in spring, but also as relates to the liberated Hebrews who left Egypt. Before the meal, certain foods are consumed by the participants of the seder, each with a special significance. Wine is used, as in all Jewish holidays of rejoicing, to signify festivity (grape juice for the children, of course). Matzo, or unleavened bread, is a thin wafer-lik- e substance, representative of the bread that didnt have time to rise before the Hebrews left Egypt. Parsley is used to signify gratitude to God for another spring. lt is dipped in salt water to remind Jews of the tears their forefathers shed in slavery. A piece of horseradish is on each plate as a reminder of the bitterness of slavery. In addition, a salad-lik- e mixture of chopped apples, raisins, almonds, cinnamon and orange juice suggests by its appearance the mortar the Hebrews mixed to make bricks for the Egyptians. Each food is accompanied by a detailed explanation of its significance, performed as a ritual and geared for children. During the eight days of Passover, many Jews eat nothing that is leavened (that has been made to rise through the use of items such as yeast). Matzo is used for in bread apd its place of other leavening ingredients.
