KURT Sunset beats Roy team In a battle of the unbeatens. Sunset s Brad Muir and Mike Arrant teamed up to hold Roy to three hits and one run, and beat them Larry Guinn was on the mound for Roy, and allowed only four hits, but the Sunset hits came in pairs in the first and fourth innings, and game them the two runs necessary to win the game Brad Muir struck out six batters in five innings, before being relieved by Mike Arrant, who struck out three Between them they walked six men Larry Guinn of Roy struck out 5 men and gave up 5 walks. Steve Beal singled to open the game, and took second on a bobble by Roy in left field Cory Little singled to advance Beal, and Decker hit a sacrifice fly to bring him in Sunset's second run came on a controversial play at the plate in inning number four After Kent Wood and Mike Arrant singled, and advanced on a wild pitch, Adams hit a grounder to second base Fred Fernandes cut Kent wood down trying to score, and Adams raced for second base On the throw to second, Arrant streaked for home and Troy Fulmer fired back to Femandex at the plate Shen the dust had settled, the umpire called the runner safe, and controversy erupted Sunset had inched out to a 2 0 lead, as the inning ended. In the sixth inning, Larry Guinn got his second hit of the day - a double to left field He moved to third on a past ball The next batter laced one down the first base line, and Guinn raced for home The throw from first was wide, and Guinn scored to close the gap to 2 1 After Roy held Sunset in the bottom the sixth. Arrant walked two Royals, and then struck out two With runners now at second and third Coach Wood wisely gave Fred and intentional walk to load the bases The strategy paid off, as the next batter grounded out to third base and the ball game was over of Fer-nande- These two teams will undoubtedly meet again in the post season playoffs, so look forward to another r between Rov and Sunset barn-burne- ) 25 percent of the players and 31 of the coaches believe that cent pei ( the findings of two University Professors from Salt Lake City and Albuquerque, New Mexico, who studied little league football in their respective cities While it was a good study, and they brought out a lot of interesting points, I challenge some of their conclusions My association has been with the Wasatch Front Football League iwffli of Northern Utah, and the ground rules vary from those of their study The professors cited a number of problem areas, and offered solutions which I would like to comment on (U "Parents are too serious They should sign the kids up and leave them alone They should detach themselves from the little league scene COMMENT - They suggested that parents stay away from the practices and the games A a parent, and former coach, I cant agree with them I didn't mind parents who came to practice, in fact I recruited some of the fathers to help me coach I with interest "Eliminate bands, cheer ' Readers and spectators from games COMMENT - I've never seen bands in the W'EFL, but a few teams had I thought thev were cheerleaders cute, and added to the game As for their suggestion of no spectators They've got to be kidding' If my boy is participating, I want to be there whether he is playing football or the piano I think he would want me to come (3) Kids are slightly young to be shouldering the piessures of public performance I COMMENT vegot to think about that one (4 "Parents get too immersed in and place too much the program emphasis on winning When the hoy comes home after a game or practice, his parents should inquire, 'Did you learn something today- Did you have ' fun0 - not, 'Did you win0 COMMENT - Arc they implying that we parents care nothing about what our kids are doing - just that they w in0 I m not corn inc ed that asking a boy if he won is a sin That s what he wants totalkalxiut My Leai n and "Fun questions i nrne Liter If he comes want to provide a home defeated, sancutuary where he can lick his wounds I want to impress on him that the sun will i ome up tomorrow, I want to teach him to accept defeat 5 participation 1 825-- 1 directly at parents A good crowd or an ugly irowd can cause an athlete to play better or worse 9 should emphasize Barents and performance, and winning COMMENT - Right and wrong What's wrong in teaching a boy to play to win0 Certainly winning shouldn't Ik at all costs, but he should be taught to compete The goal of the W EEL is to participate, perform well, and play to win 10) Each child should play at least one quarter in every game COMMENT agree This is the one the WFEL Recreation big tailing in Directors encourage coaches to play everybody, but some boys see very little action I like the idea ill) 95 percent of 531 players interviewed are more interested in having fun, than in winning 75 percent would rather play on a losing team than sit on the bench of a winner I would like to hear COMMENT the language of this question as it was presented to the youngsters Total inactivity on a winning team is bad, and no one wants that, but kids are willing to spend time on the bench in crucial games, if they get to play in other games The winners l.ave full rosters by the seasons end League leaders very seldom have to forfeit games as the season wears on CONCLUSION 1 got the impression in reading the report of the College professors, that they are blaming a lot of parents for the adverse actions of a few The AFFL is not guilty of many of then charges The City Recreation leaders of our area have the interest of the Ixiy foremost in their minds Some parents tend to spoil the rogram, but most of them understand the purpose of little league football and support it participation discuss 114 to take first and second place respectively in the Intermountain AAU Junior Olympic Track and Field meet, held last week in Salt Lake City The meet featured competitors from Utah, Idaho and Nevada.
