June 21. 1973 Square Dancers Weber County shares offices at Boys State Utah looks forward to largest convention Upwards of 15,000 friendly square dancers are expected in Salt Lake City beginning June 28 for the 22nd National Square Dance Convention at the Salt Palace, the first time the event has been held in Utah. It will be the largest convention in the history of the state. But then its not a convention in the usual sense of long dreary meetings and tasteless banquets and little parties that arent so dry. In fact, its a statistical truth that most square dancers dont diiiik they havent the time because they will be here to dance! !)ys 3GuHEBf Gp For those who can take the pace, dancing will begin at each of the three days, and continue until midnight, in every danceable sized room in the Salt Palace. If that isnt enough, then there will be trail-enparties the night preceeding, and afterparties before its all over. g A Roy youth was ROY elected to serve as state official during a contest held at Utah Boys State Wednesday. Selected to serve as a Supreme Court Justice was Brian L. Stuart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald E. Stuart, 2347 W. 4400 So. David R. Tollstrup, Salt Lake City, and Tom Porter, Roy, were named by their fellow Utah Boys Staters Friday to attend Boys Nation during July in Washington, D.C. Primary and final elections pitted the Federalists against the Nationalists in the hypothetical local, state and Roy Ward national government organization in which the boys have lived during the past week while at Utah State University. Mr. Porter, son of Mrs. Mae Porter 5324 So. 2000 W., ran on an independent platform and won a first at Boys State. Tom attends Roy High School. David Reese Tollstrup is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith R. Tollstrup, 1892 E. 6400 So. He is a student at Cottonwood High School. Boys State closes Saturday at 2 p.m., with a graduation ceremony in USUs Spectrum. Parents and friends are in- vited to attend the ceremony. d The square dance world has various interest groups that will be doing their own thing, with contra dancing, round dancing, youth dancing, solo dancing, challenge dancing and more. But most of the dancers will catch a little bit of the vhole scene. Exhibition gnups from all over the nation, including Utahs own Ribbons and Spurs participates will perform during breaks in the Main Arena and in the Exhibition Hall. (And the scene will be very different from a hockey game or a car show.) For the more academic minded, the three days will be with panel sprinkled discussions by experts, where dance leaders from around the country can compare notes on how to solve problems common to all, such as how to find new members, etc. Detailed workshops will also be offered on the subject of square dance calling, a job that is a lot harder than it looks. Speaking of callers, the best in the cc jitry will be there, and the variety will be endless, at the incredible pace of five minutes per caller in each of the halls. Except for a few of the parties, the dancing will be all within the Salt Palace, and Utah dancers are justly proud of their hall, because some conventions have had to be scattered all over a city, just to find space. But dancers are tourists too, and one of the activities on tap will be a youth hike to Cave in American Fork Canyon the morning of the 29th. And if you dont dance? A buck will get you in to see what its all about, and you just might decide to give it a try with any of Utah's active clubs. conference; these represent roadshows in all wards presented in the past MIA year.
