Male sage grouse gather on traditional strutting grounds during March ana April and put on a spectacular courtship performance. With tails fanned and wings drooped, they strut about. Inflated air sacks on the neck show yellow through slits in the white feathered neck. Plopping sounds accompany the display as the air sacks are worked in what almost appears to be an occasional seige of hiccups. All this is done by the males to attract a female. These strutting grounds may hold lip to 200 males at one time. Females visit the grounds during the first part of April and nesting begins a short while later. The hen nests on the ground, usually under Sage Brush and lays from 5 to 9 eggs. Tbe incubation period is about 25 days. Upon hatching the young remain with the hen. The young feed mainly on insects and succulent vegetation. During early pioneer days, the sage grouse was one of the most abundant game birds. Good, sound management existing open sagebrush plains and foothills is needed to insure perpetuation of this resource. of ? ..kW T' y A publication dealing with birds of prey in Utah is now available at Division of Wildlife Resources offices.
