Music stressed for students at ROY -- - Loyal West, de- partment head, and Roger Campbell, music teacher, felt the need toprovide more music for more students at Roy Junior High. They believe guitar is one of the fastest, most satisfying ways to accomplish this objective. With the cooperation of Ray Coleman, prinicpal, and V.E. Griffen, vice principal, they instituted a guitar class this year after trying it experimentally last year. It has grown in interest and enrollment. Between 80 to 85 of the students are now involved in one of the music programs - bands, guitar, orchestra, choirs, or glee club. Roy Jun -- RJH ior, therefore, has provided an ideal environment for an organized program in its cur- riculum. The new program is using a variety of materials in trying to develop and improve the teaching techniques. Some students enter the class having had previous experience with the guitar and some have never played. Thus an individualized program tailored to each stu- dents needs has been developed. The students performed at the fall and Christmas concerts singing folk songs and accompanying themselves on guitars. They will appear again in the spring musical.
