I feel that our existing liquor laws have a great bearing on these statistics. Our present liquor law encourages drunkenness. Because of these facts, even though 1 am a tec totaler, 1 favor the sale of liquor by the drink. There are twoo ther very important reasons besides the moral isuse which cause me to tend to favor this bill: for the revenue and tourist trade. Our state budget is strained to the breaking point even without considering the additional 19 million dollars needed for our school program, the va.--t sums needed for our mental health program, our juvenile detention program and our capital improvement program. From somewhere more revenue must come. Liquor by the drink woud prove such a source. We are presen ty spending millions of dollars attempting to create a tourist state out of I't ill. This will be money wasted unless we can cause the tourists to stay here longer than the day and a half they now remain. Our present liquor law is a great deterrent to building our tourist trade. We presently have the sale of liquor by the drink in legislation because only vate clubs. This is discrimina-thoswho can afford to belong to these exclusive private clubs in save them.
