A The purpose of the sterling scholar awards is to publicly recognize and encourage the pursuit of excellence in scholarship, leadership and citizenship of high school seniors in the state of Utah. The program was developed especially to focus attention on outstanding seniors in order to recognize them publicly as wel as award cash scholarships and tuition waivers from participating institutions. Dustin Wood and Josh Robertson participate in one of the major goals at ECHS. This goal is to have al students continually reading books outside the regular curriculum. In an effort to support this goal, recreational books both fiction and nonfiction have been placed directly in the classroom. Several teachers have set aside an jotted time for students to regularly engage in silent sustained reading. The students are able to choose from a variety of recreational books within the classroom. Other teachers are taking the opportunity to read aloud to their students while they are drawing or doing other fj? tf. J , .
