Show 6A Ibesday February 5, 2002 Cgairboim destiw-- D mem K ' 2 Dinos in second Indy Dinos lake out Rabbits in Delta place in Region 8 By KRISTINA KONTGAS By For the Carbon High Lady Dinos, Thursday night was just one of those on nights, as they defeated the Delta Rabbits for the second time this season, 60-4- 1. RICHARD SHAW Sports editin The Carbon Dinoswent Rabbit hunting on Friday night and they did it in the dark. No they didnt illegally spot light hunt; they just did it while it was dark and outside and by the time they were done it was dark inside the Dinogym too because the Carbon boys had shot the lights out. Making up for a disappointing loss to the Rabbits earlier in the season in Millard County, the team took out their frustrations on the kids from Delta and whipped them 79-5It was a truly interesting game, with a noisy crowd and people having to use a different entrance to get in because the old gym next door was occupied with a varsity wrestling meet at the same time. People kept going from one to the other and after the basketball game wrapped up many fans walked into the other gym and watched the Dino wrestlers beat upon Union. In some ways there was a wrestling match going on in the Dinogym as well. The Carbon boys are trying to stay alive in the Region 8 race for a spot at the state tournament and went a long ways towards doing that by beating Delta. They are now tied for second in the Region with Emery and Delta, while third ranked in the state Lehi leads the league with an undefeated record. - Carbon jumped all over the Rabbits right from the beginning of the tame and never let up. They played good defense and held onto the ball very well. At the end of the first they were ahead a good sign. Carbon has won few games this season when they didn't lead at the end of die first period. The second quarter was similar as the Dinos out scored Delta 18-1Matt Jewkes moves to the basket kept the Rabbits very honest on their defense and they had to pay the price as 10 Carbon players scored in the game. But it was the third quarter where the Dinos really ran down their prey. They destroyed the Rabbits at that point turning their offense into a joke and almost pouring the ball through the bas- letatwilLBytheendofthequar- - going into the fourth quarter, the: starting five returned to the floor to secure their lead, soon sendii ingin the JV squad to takeover and once again, putting in mord i points than Delta, 16-1-3. And that is exactly what i O happened This win improved Carbons! record to 15-- 2 overall, and 0 im T region. The next game will be Tieso day night at home against Emery, who is 0 overall, and in Region 8. Earlier this season, when Delta visited Price to open region play, they returned home with a loss of 63-3- 4. One would think that maybe Delta would review 5-- to the game before the try and stop Carbons defense. Well, if they did, they didn't do a very good job of it, as the Lady Dinos stepped up to their defense, only to break it, out scoring the Lady Rabbits 21-- 6 in the first quarter. If this scenario' looks familiar, it should because this is how previous games this season have gone for Carbon. The second quarter was a litrie better for the Rabbits, as Delta allowed Carbon to score only 14 points, and coming up with eight of their own. But to catch up to the Dinos, they would have hail to score quite abit more, and they realized that going into the locker room at the naif with a score of ch 4. l-- 4r 6-1- 35-1- 4. Defensively, Delta was our best game," stated head coach Bruce Bean. The first half was just awesome; we got out there and stepped up and played. The second half? Well we just kind of cruised through it After the half. Delta came back to play better defense and offense, this time outscoring the Lady Dinos 14-Kit even with a 16 point lead 9. Carlson's players shot ttie Bghts out of the Dinogym on their way to a victory over the Delta Rabbits on Friday nigftt ter they led 59-3- 7 and never looked back. The Rabbits may as well have packed their bags, but hope springs eternal. However, the hope got lost and the spring dried up; they didn't gain a thing in the fourth period, in fact even with a good effort they still lost ground, In the end it was the balance that Carbon showed that did Delta in. Matt Jewkes had an outstanding game in many ways, demonstrated by his 22 points and his fine moves to the basket One of the best things about had four, Jeff Anderson had three, Jake Wood and. Matt Hough each had two a piece and Tyson Hackwell and Kyle Willson each had one. Delta only had three from beyond the arc. Now Carbon must travel to Emery County on Wednesday night and beat die Spartans to solidify their position. They lost at home to the Spartans a month ago, but things have changed. Carbon isaberier team now, particularly with their outside shooting touch being what it is. Then next week they face North Sanpete at home with the final game of the regular season against powerful Lehi in Utah CountyonFeb.13.
