The girls from Carbon High showed the kids from Mount Pleasant what a hand in the face was all about as they crushed the Lady Hawks 3 In a Region 8 contest last Thursday night It was also the night for a new leading scorer to emerge from the trenches we all call the front line as Brittany Pollastro led the team in scoring with 16 points. Its hard for anyone to remember the last time someone with the last name of Warburton didnt lead the team in that category for a game, but Pollastro, gunned the points in despite the feet the Lady Hawks efforts to stop her. The final score belies the fact however, that the first half was dose. Its hard to tell whether that was the case because of the Hawk defense or the ineptness of the Lady Dino offense, but it was dose. At the end of an anemic first quarter the score was tied No one on the Dino squad seemed to be able to find the basket It was just one of those nights. The second quarter brought a little encouragement as the Carbon girls outscored North but it wasnt that Sanpete the shooting got any better, it was 13jtn& scored 11, The Emery High Spartans won the battle forcontrol by leading the Carbon Dims throughout the game. Lady Vikings break the Mustangs By RICHARD SHAW Sports editor East Carbon now stands at 2 in Region 18 and in third place in the league standings, just behind Dugway. The team now plays at Wendover on Tliesday night; a' team that was short handed when they beat up on them earlier in theseason. 4-- When the Mustangs of Dugway come to town, one can expect anything. But last Thursday only thing that was i the west desert kids dans as the Lady Vikings of East Carbon beat them at their own game Led by Alaena Preston with 19 points, the East Carbon girls took out the Lady Mustangs with their foul shooting making 15 of 25 from the line as the Dugway kids were only able to convert four of eight from the charity i 57-4- 7. The first period was tight as the lead seesawed back and forth. By the end of the quarter Dugway had scrambled to a one point lead The second period was the same as the score remained stalemated. Both teams looked a little rusty in the quarter, but both playedgood defense too as the teams went into the locker room with each scoring 10 in the quarter. East Carbon was behind at die haff, but they came out determined to do something with one of the leading scorers in the state NatashaPagan,whohad25inthe game, but scored less in the second halt straddled with fouls that (her out of action in the fourth ciuarter. In the thiraperiod East Carbon was able to gain the edge by barely out pacing the Lady Mustangs It was in the fourth period i when Dugways fouls started to catch up with than that die Lady Vikes started to pull away. Along 3. basi-cal- hr , i Carbon, not able to score, went into a full court press right from the get go of the second half and didnt let up until the third quarter was over. They held the Lady Hawks to three points in the period, possibly a new record for a Lady Dino opponent in the Dinogym. More importantly though, the defense forced turnovers that led to many easy Carbon baskets, something they had not gained in the first two quarters of the game. Carbon scored 22 points, many on break away baskets either from steals or from Hawk players who shot from any and all angles just to keep a Carbon hand out of their face. . hwas like someone turned the tap on and then off again. Proving what all knowledgable basketball analysts know, a great defense makes a great offense, dm girls went back to their old ways in the fourth period and only outscored the worn out Hawks in the quarter. 4 They really won the game in one quarter and if this doesnt prove to everyone that this team is for real, nothing will. Few teams, particularly high school teams, can turn it off and on like that. The girls themselves also truly learned the value of defense like never before. It was probably the worst shooting game Carbon has played this year, with the possible exception of the loss to Snow Canyon earlier this year. It was also the best demonstra- tion of what Carbons team defense can do to the opposing team. , i The Lady Dinos are now 0 in league pfey and 13-- 2 overall.
