Some people who have reached an outstanding level of success might try to forget a past life that included alcoholism, or applaud themselves for pulling their own lives up by the bootstraps. Hill gives credit where it is due. During a recent interview on 'The 700 Club, an internationally syndicated telecast produced by the Christian Broadcasting Network, Hughes revealed an experience that pulled him out of his downward spiralling bout with alcoholism. "Alcohol is one of the worst evils in the world," said Hughes. "Half of the men and women in prison are there because of crimes committed while they were under the influence of alcohol. One teenager in 15 will become alcoholic, and 40 percent of the mental patients are in institutions because of their involvement with liquor. Because of statistics like these, the federal government annually on alcoholism-relatespends more than rehabilitation.
