Utahs computer science department will enable the college to purchase three computers plus software equipment. According to Ray Beckett, CEU director of development, the money will be used to purchase three computers including the keyboards, disc drives, monitors and column enrds With the growth of the computer science department at CEU and the limited availability of computers to train our students on, we have had to seek outside funds to build our program, Beckett said. Our already overburdened program of 146 potential students per available computer will not permit the college to provide the educational courses needed without the purchase of additional equipment. CEU currently has 10 in the department for training students. With the com-pute- rs recent budget reductions mandated by Gov. Scott M. Matheson and no prospect for an increase for several years to come, the capacity to purchase needed computer hardware and software without outside financial support appears very remote, he said. CEUs computer science department is the fastest growing department on campus with discussions by administrators to require a minimum of one computer science class as a requirement for an associate degree in the future. Beckett said that besides offering the basic computer educational program to its students, CEU is providing computer operations and to many programming training educators from Carbon and Emery school districts. Beginning fall quarter 1982, the college has provided computer classes for 308 per- sonnel, teachers and ad- ministrators in the area. The school districts approached CEU to train its educators to become computer literate in order to keep ahead of or catch up with many of Beckett said.
