Show RECREATION - OUTDOORS S- L- DWR wildlife Spring is the time when a wannabe fisheries managers decide to carry out few their own stocking program. Figuring they can outdo the professionals, these bucket-totin- g bandits transport their favorite fish species from one body of water to another. By so doing, they ruin the fishery for other anglers. The Wildlife Code prohibits the transport of five fish or crayfish from the water were taken. Further, anyone releasing live aquatic wildlife into a lake or stream is guilty of a class A misde- meanor. Dont risk being reeled in by the long arm of the law. Leave those fish where they belong. Its becoming a springtime ritual of sorts. Horsemen from across the state travel to the Henry Mountains for a game of chase with the bison. g Drawn by the excitement as they race after the thundering herds, riders experience as good a thrill heart-stoppin- briefs ride as there ever was! Unfortunately, its the buffalo that pay the price for the entertainment. After surviving winter months on a starvation diet and suffering from the physiological stresses of pregnancy and lactation, cows and calves espe- cially cannot afford the demands placed upon them by being run mile after mile. Conservation officers have stepped up surveillance of the Henry Mountains herd in an attempt to put an end to this activity. Horsemen are encouraged to give buffalo and other wildlife a wide berth while riding. Pursuit and harassment of wildlife is unlawful. The health and g of individual animals are at stake here. Our Henry Mountains unit is the g bison herd only in the United States managed entirely by hunting. Lets not gamble this unique legacy for a reckless joy ride. well-bein- free-rangin- Area fishing spots, hooking local fishermen with action Manti Mountain (in Carbon Hunand Emery counties) stocked for Creek was tington the first time, during the week of May 6, with 3,000 catchable trout. Millsite Reservoir has offered only fair fishing for trout. Anglers are using salpan-size- d mon eggs or Powerbait. Scofield Reservoir has opened up entirely. Boats may be launched. Fishing has been very good with lui'es or a variety of baits. Lake Powell Wayne Lake Powell project leader, reports striped bass action is just beginning in the upper lake near Hite. Anglers may expect another good week of catching fish in the backs of canyons and coves. The lake level is stable and temperatures are not too high, so this week may be the peak of spring fishing for bass and crappie this year. Continue to use . plastic grubs for fast action. A retrieve works some days, while a slow steady retrieve is better on other days. Use both and let the fish decide which they want on any given day. Many techniques are working now, with bass at their activity peak. Top water lures have produced in the early morning. Jerk baits sometimes stimulate finicky fish into biting.
