Show THE Page Eight Mining Company Properties Assessed By State of County Charges 6.1 1 as- Mining company properties sessed by the state tax commission were charged with 16.1 per cent of the total of $38,168,354 in property taxes charged against county treasurers in Utah in 1950, it is revealed in a report prepared by the property tax division of the state tax commission. The information will be published in the statistical portion of the biennial report of the tax commission, which will soon go to press. The 16.1 per cent, $6,146,044, means that about $1 in every $6 of property taxes paid In the state of Utah comes from the The entire mining companies. ield from the property taxes is expended by local governmental units about 60 per cent under the direction of the boards of county commissioners, and the other 20 per cent by city and councils, and the town boards. However, the 16.1 per cent by no means comprises all the contribution by the mining industry to the governmental expenses of the Utah schools, counties and The blast furmunicipalities. naces and steel mills in Utah county and the smelters at Garfield, Midvale, and Tooele, for example, make substantial contributions in property taxes; but they are classed as manufacturing plants, rather than as mining properties, and therefore are as- com-m.ssio- ns Buy From a Reliable Bcalcr With Confidence Deal 1948 Plymouth Sedan Special Deluxe. Such plants, intimately concerned with the mining industry and dependent on it, contribute some millions in property taxes in addition to the $5,643,457 paid by mining properties that are assessed by the tax commission; but the reports of the county auditors to the tax commission do not furnish the detailed information as to the amount so paid. The tax commission assesses coal mines, oil wells and similar properties, also, as mining concerns. It also assesses gas companies and pipe lines, but these are classed as public utilities and the 1.37 per cent paid by them are not included in the 16.1 per cent mentioned above. It is quite probable, said Patrick Healy, Jr., chairman of the tax commission, that the industries directly associated in the popular mind with the production of raw metals and fuels contribute at least 20 per cent of the total property taxes paid in the state. In addition, of course, some of these companies pay substantial income taxes, all of which goes to the support of the district school system. If one were to go a step farther, and try to estimate the proportion of taxes paid by the employees of mining companies, and by the stores and service industries, the doctors and all the others whose livelihood depends in great part on the wages and salaries paid by mining companies, and if to that were added the large proportion of revenue to the from transportation companies the hauling of coal and ores and of the metal produced; by the business concerns engaged in fabricating or treating mineral products; and by the persons in the agricultural industry who find a home market because of the coal and metal mines, the importance of the mining industry in the public revenue picture, as well as in the entire social and economic structure of the state, would be found to be very considerable. Utilities assessed by the tax commission pay 15 per cent of the property taxes in the state, the report shows. Those concerned directly with the transportation of passengers and freight pay 8.98 per cent; power companies 2.77 per cent; and those handling communication and (telegraph 1.85 telephone companies) per cent. Property assessed by the county assessors paid 68.9 per cent of the 1950 property tax bill, or a total of $26,301,461, the report of the property tax division shows. Land assessed as town and city lots, and the buildings thereon paid $13.5 million or 35.51 per cent of the total of property taxes. Land assessed as acreage and the improvements on such lands including industrial plants outside city limits, paid a little more than $5 million, or 13.37 per cent of all the property taxes. The county assessors found 188,947 automobiles wer,e owned in the state as of January 1 last, and taxed them at $2,474,287 or about 6.5 per cent of the total of property taxes paid. This comassessed with $680,930 pares against all the livestock in the state, whether on range or on farm.
