Harding became president. Carl R. Marcusen came to Price in 1902 as a school teacher. He Republican. A very weighed 120 pounds, and was a efficient school man, he knew how to organize as well as instruct. He was dissatisfied with school conditions here and requested improvements from the school board and even suggested they were behind the times. So Carl did not stand too high with the board, but he kept talking about the poor schools and he was well able to state his cause. In 1907 a new principal was needed for the Price schools. Carl came to my office and explained his position. He was a very fluent talker and he was right besides. The school board election was not far off and we decided to make a fight for more progressive members. So the donkey and the elephant climbed into bed together to win the school board election. Marcusen more than proved his worth. He became superintendent of schools, held many high state offices in the Republican party, and could have at one time very easily been elected governor of Utah if he had chosen. He became a powerful financial figure in Salt Lake City before he died. His prominence helped our city immensely throughout the state. The Price academy was where the present board of education offices are now located. What we needed was a regular high school. I was mayor in 1912, and many sites had been chosen for the institution of higher learning. Marcusen wanted it down where the Doll Fausett home is now. Gustave Iverson and R. G. Miller were named to decide the site. They could not agree and I was chosen to make the final decision. We walked around and finally stood in the center of the street on Main street facing up what is now Carbon avenue. It was obvious. Just above the canal where Eighth street ends was chosen as the location for the new Carbon county high school building. (Continued Next Week) w lli aura.
