Business Costs And The Consumer- Some time ago an advertising trade publication sent a trained investigator-write- r to a small city to analyze the leading department stores operation costs. In one of his subsequent articles he points out that the cost of doing business in the investigated community was 24 per cent, six to ten per cent less than similar operating costs in the metropolitan areas. This is a merenanaising fact which comparatively few smaller city people take into consideration when they are lured away from their home town merchants by what they believe to be better prices of the large city stores. Every merchant must make a profit; if he doesnt he will soon have to close his doors. The profit is added to the cost of the goods and the expense of doing business. The large city store may buy merchandise to some advantage because of this ability to purchase in larger quantities, but his other costs are usually considerably in excess of those of the smaller city merchants. j City Recorder, City of Price, Utah.
