AT THE POSTOFFICE AT UNDER THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 187S Den-Aga- in Sore Bleeding - TIIE PROPOSED UNIVERSITY i BRANCH SECTIONALISM is not the basic principal upon which the campaign is being waged to secure for Carbon county a branch of the University of Utah. To a certain degree, of course, sectionalism is bound to play a part in the move to secure such an institution for this district. However, the real fundamental issue involved is that of education, advancement of knowledge on an organized basis which will prove of lasting and material benefit to society as a whole. It is admitted in practically all circles that educational structure in the state, particularthe ly in the advanced class, is far too limited and that in order that this commonwealth may keep abreast of progress in line with other channels there must be greater facilities for the academic instruction of our youngsters. There appears to be no argument on that point, it is so generally accepted. In view of the admitted necessity for greateducational facilities the question as to locaer tion of such institutions naturally becomes an issue at stake. And that is where the sectionalism must enter into consideration. Lack of state institutions of this type in this section so-call- ed of the state naturally works to the disadvantage of the youths of this area, making opportunities for their acquirement of greater learning much more limited than they are in other districts of Utah. This limitation of such opportunities is detrimental to the welfare of Utah as a whole. And so legislators should appreciate that in seeking a branch of the University of Utah the people of this area are not primarily prompted by advancement of the district to the disadvantage of any other section of the state. In seeking the institution of higher learningUarbon county does not desire to take anything away from any other part of the state ; it is simply a matter of securing a belated share of the educational development which is so generally accepted as necessary knowledge-growt- h in the natural march of progress of the state. According to a recent survey, med- - ' , ical students spend half of their time c in college on the study of drugs and and Corporations surgery, while Chiropractic students devote all of their time to the human body and the causes and treatment of disease. In other words, the chiropractor spends more hours of study on most of the basic subjects than does the medical student. He is now examined in the basic subjects by his own examining board. The proposed Basic Science Board will be a duplicate board for the taxpayers to support, and will enable the medical man to be exempt from its provisions and give him control over the drugless professions through the discriminatory use of the licensing ' provisions of the proposed act. If enacted, basic science legislation will mean that the chiropractor and the osteopath will have to learn the art of healing as taught in medical colleges, for they will have to take the medical mens examination. Basic science is unnecessary, because in all the leading branches of, the healing arts, examination boards have been legally created by the state. From the public viewpoint, this to standardization, is preferable whigh destroys incentive and competition. In our efforts to make everything fit into a formula, we are prone to lose sight of the necessities of certain arts and professions, where individualism and free competition militate for the common good. The legislature should not interfere with the right of the people to have the doctor and the pealing method of their choice. Very truly yours, A. K. BRAMWELL, D. C.
