Show 2A Sun Advocate Price, Utah Tuesday December 10, 2002 Unemployment up in county and state Construction and manufacturing have been declining for several years, so the most noteworthy f these bottom three is trade. Trade began losing jobs earlier thisycar, but it showed some signs of stabilization in the summer months as consumers continued to find ways to spend money. But the employment declines have been picking up again in the latter end of 2fX)2, suggesting that the consumer, who in a large degree has helped temper this recession, is running out of spending steam. Trade employment is down 23) percent, the 5, (XX) year-ovlost jobs recorded in November are the highest numbers seen within trade's current slide. Manufacturing, which ftn-ploover I IK,(K) workers reported a loss of 5,(XX) year-ovlost jobs recorded in November (Continued from page 1A) cation employment. Services is the other growth industry, adding ,700 workers. This is an 0.8 percent growth rate-nmuch compared to the per formancc experienced throughout much of the late IWOs, hut still a minor victory. It is significant to note that a year ago the Salt Lake Organizing Committee had around 1,4(X) workers who are nearly all gone. Therefore, in the face of being compared with last years Olympic spike, the Olympic effect actually masks a larger gain that is occurring in services. The rest of Utah's employment picture is negative. Construction stands out as the industry with the most lost jobs at 6(XI. This is followed by manufacturing and trade, which both dropped 5, (NX) positions. . 1 ot lost 2, KX) jobs, estate er ys er arc the highest number seen within trade's current slide.
