One that is wreaking havoc with the lives of millions of men, women and children, but only 20 percent of the people who need treatment are receiving it Would we help? Thats the situation that pre- vails in tire United States. The disease is alcohol and drug addiction. Men and women in the recovery community cite three disturbing trends that contribute to the deteriorating situation. First, there has been a notice- able of sub- stance abuse and addiction as foe great strides made during the modem alcoholism movement" that gathered force through the 1970s have slowly dissipated. Second, substance abuse has moved further outside the medical re aim as the idea of addiction as a disease has come under attack. This is alarming given there is better information than ever before that addiction is a disease characterized by compulsive drug-seeki- ng behavior that criminalization of addiction. The nation is building more prisons and continues to incarcerate people with alcohol and substance abuse and addiction prob- lems. In many cases, they receive no treatment while in prison.
