Show ELECTRIC SIRENS PUCE AT THE HIKE You can buy these products with confidence What perhaps is one of the most outstandinf of the many problems confronting coal mine operators, relates F. A. Orth of Cicago, Ills., is that of notifying the men on a moment's notice that there is no work for the day. If workers come to the mine and have not been previously notified that there is no work, the operators must pay them two hours wages. That is the agreement between the operators and the men at most mines. Many outstanding I .nd whole family mines have solved this problem with the electric siren, a tower installation of which , is illustrated here. Its wierd, penetrating screech carries the no work message to all I of the workers within a radius of one and a. half to two miles. They do not trudge to the properties only to find that there is no work, and the operators save the two hours wages. In addition, the electric siren is used to awaken the workers in the morning, to tell them when it is time to start to work and to sound the start and quit signal. Too, it is used during, working hours as a fire and general emergency alarm. . The ones most generally used in these capacities are the one, three and five horsepower d sirens. The is used on underground b- Courtly Suit Lake Mining ltevicw. comotives and in other places where a signaling device having a sound radius of only a quarter of a mile is desirable. The one horsepower consists of three of the one-thihorsepower sirens mounted on a triangular base, and is usually erected in a stationary position where a siren having a sound radius greater than that of a d horsepower and less than that of a five unit, is required. The three and five horsepower ones are those most generally used for sounding the start and quit work signal, no work signal and fire and general emergency alarm. The three horsepower siren is of single horn construction, and the five is of double horn construction. An additional feature of the three and five is that they may be had to sound code signals. When used to warn of f i e or accident they can, therefore, be made to tell at the Mm1 time where the fire or accident is by code. . & proved.
