FISH WILL USE LADDER Water So Low In Strawberry Lake Makes It Necessary. lVvcipitation was an low last winter in the Strawberry Reservoir Basin that this year the atate fish and game department haa built a ladder for the fihli to elimb out of the reservoir and into Indian Creek. The water in the artificial lake ia possibly eight feet below the level it has maintained the past few years. The ladder, therefore, bcame a necessity, for at this season of the year many thousands of fish seek a method to go upstream on their annual (spawning trip. If the drop were a straight fall, from Indian Creek into the 'Make," as it ia commonly known, the fish might not require the ladder, but the United Stnteu reclamation service, in constructing the reservoir, made provision against the straight drop for various reasons. Instead they built a cement waterway probably well over a hundred feet long, mathematically straight and uniform. While the reservoir remains high, this aqueduct is covered up 'practically all the way and the fish have no dii'f irulty in making the run, but as the level of the lake recedes, the water, this year only three' or four inches deep, rushes down the long incline with great speed, and the fish find they can make no headway against it Thousands of fish had assembed at the outlet of Indian Creek and ineffectually puzzled over the problem of what was to be don about it. Their presence and their difficulty was duly noted by the state fish and game department, which for numerous reasons is quite anxious that the fish make their annual pilgrimage. Accordingly the ladder was built a trough of wooden planks with numerous pieces extending only purt way across the trough, first from one side and then from the other. It was not a very beautiful makeshift for the swing of the current from bank to hank which Dame Nature provides for the benefit of her finny children, and at first the trout did not like the appearance of the thing. Then, according to J. V. Tingev, deputy fish and game cocmissioner, a few fish that had been caught were released in the trough and hastened down it to the lake. Wheu the assembled schools of fish saw some of their lirethern come out of the contraption alive, they consented to examine it more closely, and next morning some thousands of them were found in Indian Creek, some three miles above the outlet and the trough. The fodder is of simple construction and built in sections, so that it will be available for another jrar, Wing removed from the spillway after its use for the present year has ended. In five counties, Okanogan, Douglas, Grant Kittitas and Yakima, definite were carried on last year to get rid of groundhogs entirely with the result that an estimated saving of rrops amounting to more than ten thousand dollars was made on nine thousand four hundred and seventy-foacres in these counties. In Okanogan a district of ten square miles was entirely cleared by the destruction of about fifteen thousand.
