ROSE rbjtkiu and Surgeun Mill burn Residence, UTAH-EVE- RY l.fciiiuates submitted last Friday to the new industries committee of the Salt Lake Commercial club by IV C. Dunbar, collector of internal revenue for the District of Utah, show that ledt-ra- l taxes paid by rorpurat ions g bunes iu this state amount approximately to thirty million dollars annually. While reports uu file at the Salt Lake City office show a total collection of in taxes for 1919, the collector in his letter to Julian Bamberger, chairman of the committee, called attention to the fact that the largest concerns doing business iu the states are ) vying their federal taxes iu cities where the headquarters of the firms are located. Dunbar jaunted out that while the place of jay-uieof such taxes is optional with the corioration under the regulations, Utah should be credited with the amount paid for the reason that the earnings of the corporations are made on property located in this state. Among the coruratinns listed by Dunbar as doing business here and paying their taxes elsewhere are the Utah Cop)KT company, United States Smelting, Refining aud Mining eom-aii- y, Utah luwer and Light, Uniou Pacific, the Denver aud Rio Uratnle, J. C. Penney company and Western Union Telegraph, all paid in New York; Western Pacific in San Francisco; Los Angeles and Salt Lake in Los Angeles, Cala., Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph, in Denver, and United States Fuel eonqiany and Continental Oil company in Boston. The purjKise of the investigation made by Dunbar waa to ascertain whether Utah is seruring a fair pro-xi- rt innate distribution of government funds. do-in- ut ing of the stockyards from the packing business is both complete and is made in a way satisfactory to the court. A consent decree was entered some time ago, at which time the ackers agreed to dispute of some fourteen stockyards now in their control, but the plan of disposal which they submitted was not acceptable to the eourt, and the appointment of two trustees followed. Pending disposal of the yards, the packers have been required to deiKHtit their stock in stockyards romimnies with the Illinois Trust company, and this stock will U voted by the two trustees. The court allowed one year to complete the disposal of the yards, but if the transfer is not finished within that time an extension may be granted by the eourt. Gentleness Orest Aid. The practical value of treating live atoek kindly is discussed by a Virginia live stock owner in a letter to the United States department of agriculture. All cattle buyers, he remarks, know how great is the drift in shipping cattle. Very much of this loss is due to digestive troubles caused by excitement and fear incident to traveling. Keep all live stock as quiet and make them as gentle as possible and your feeding cost will be noticeably reduced. Try this suggestion with one litter of pigs. It will abundantly repay any live stock breeder, he adds, to siieiid a great deal of time going out quietly among his animals and letting them make the advancements. He will be surprised how soon he can liegin to put his hands on them. After they realize his hands are not to be dreaded they will soon enjoy gentle rubbing and scratching. When animals are sheltered from annoying or excitiqg occurrences they digest feed better and it takes much less to keep up the normal growth and the fat production. PM FRIDAY. Utahs securities commission in co (Iteration with the chiefs of jiolice, city recorders and other officials throughout the state has inaugurated a eauiimign for the purpose of locating agents who are selling promotion stock sit bout first having secured permission to do so, Helier C. Hicks, secretary. Las announced. The ae- tioii is lieing taken by the commission to afford additional protection to the Utah investor against the selling of worthless shares. According to Hicks romplaints have been received in his office from many different iartsof the state indicating that agents Lavs been failing to comply with the law and are now liable to prosecution. These will lie given a reasonable time only in which to take out their licenses and unless lltey do so without delay, prosecutions will follow and the publie will lie wanted through the newspapers and city officers to guard against them and to rcjiort their names to thej secretary of the commission. It is also reNirted to the coiumis-- l sion that a nuiulier of oil and mining totiqianies as well as industrial ones are selling their stock without permission and a list of these rnnipauies is lieing secured for the purpose of notifying them to comply with the law. The commission has determined to place a striet interpretation u(Nin the law and to force all companies to emne under the regulation of the state. In filing applications for license to sell oil stock the commission holds that each romiaiiy must stand entirely upon the merits of its rase and the method of procedure by the rommis- sion will dejiend entirely ujam what each company presents, as well as the jiersonnel of the officers and the abil- ity of those officers to do what they make application for. The eommiaaion desires to assist in the constructive development of the state, but is going to do everything in its power to prevent fraudulent schemes through the sale of stocks and to force all companies to do ae- -l tive development work and to keep the general adminiatration of the affairs within reason. 11 KICK I PRICE BOTTLING WORKS Phone 24 PltlCE, UTAH The Secret of Smartness Soma women always look chic and smart.
