Show APED l ; . h a v s x JILL SHEEP PRICES . FIFTY CENTS i i Heavy receipts of fst cattle today gave the steer market a weaker tone over the entire circuit Had fewer ar rived in Chicago and more elsewhere the market would not have been adversely affected.. Here priees ruled steady to fifteen cents lower. Moat of the lightweight steers, butcher cattle and stockers and feeders were steady. Hog prices were steady with Saturday and steady to ten lower than the extreme high point last week. The trade was active with the shipping demand urgent. Sheep and lambs adto fifty to a new vanced twenty-fiv- e high position for the year. Receipts today were 12,500 cattle, 7500 hogs and 7000 sheep, compared with 14,000' cattle, 7500 hogs, and .7000 sheep a week ago and 11,100 cattle, 12,225 hogs and 13,315 sheep aygar ago. Fat steer priees wer quoted steady to fifteen lower. Practically all" the lowpriced kinds And the light and the handy weight grade .were l steady. All heavyweights hnd higher priced kinds showed the decline. Trade was late in starting, but as soon as the lower level on heavy steen had been established there was a free movement over the leales. The best steen here brought $13.25 to $13.75 with handy weights selling in about the same range as the heavies. The bulk of .the feds brought $12.00 to $13.25. Dogie and plain brought $10.00 to $IL50. In proportion to total receipts of eattle there were fewer fst steen than a t i i a .i f I ' ' , , . na-iiy- es week ago. Butchers, especially heif-a-n ana mixed yearlings, were in active demand. Local requirements arc larger than the supply. ' Choice cows sold st $10.00 to $10.75 and choice heifen $11.75 to 12.f0. Veal calves and bulls wen fully steady. Liberal supplies of stockers aud fecdon wen , i available. Prices wen fully steady with the demand active. I r lv ! fl ; ' WEEK NOTICE Of Lnd Ofto A' Salt Lake Citv. Utah. cation Price, March 23, 1928. Notice is hereby BSesW, of the United States department of agriculture. Thu surplus feed w now being profitably disposed of by pasturing idle work stock and dry dairy cows from nearby irrigated districts through the fall and winter months. One rancher reports two hundred head being grazed at a cost of two dollars per month per head for cows and three for horses. Another reports a hundred and fifty head of mixed stoek at the aame prices. All say the farmers consider these priees cheap as compared to hay and jump at a chance to get their stoek on s pasturage basis. The forest service ezjieriiuenta in range management have shown the necessity of conservative stocking of '.basing the' carrying capacity upon the forage produced in an average year, and tKqn not attempting to utilize-.al- l of the feedjbut leaving a small rejtfrve, both as ika 'insurance measure against Conditions that year and a a' small supply to carry over into, the the-rang- en That conservative management of range lands will produce an improvement in forage and stock apparent even to the lay observer ia indicated by an incident reported from the Santa Bits range reserve in Arisons, says the forest service of the United States department of agriculture. Passing along a road, used for hauling ore and which goes through two of the Santa Rita pastures, an official of a Los Angeles, Cala., mining company asked : Why is there so much more grass on the ground, and why sre the eattle I see along the road in these pastures in so much better condition than on all this other range I see of about the same elevation I Officials of the Santa Rita explained that the ranges of the reserve were managed on the basis of stocking conservatively with no more eattle than the range will carry, of uniform distribution of stock by the proper location of salt grounds and watering places in order to secure full utilization of the feed without overgrazing and of improvement of the grade of stock by the use of purebred bulb. The greeter quantity of feed available on tiie reserve makes it possible to keep the cattle in good and thrifty breeding condition throughout the entire year. Although the feed on the Santa. Rita is used conservatively, the more vigorous growth made and the greater stand of grasses has made it possible to carry more cattle on the average o nan equal arear of range over the last twelve years period than on the uncontrolled open range adjoining. It is significant that the contrast between the regulated range and the unregulated outside the reserve was groat enough to attract the notiee of one in no way connected with the live stock business.
