General sentiment in both houses of congress is said to be overwhelmingly in favor of the Isidge measure. The fuel famine in various parts of the country, especially in New England, prompted Senator Lodge to introduce the bill,' which would authorize the executive to impose embargo on shipments to foreign countries until domestic needs are supplied. The period of such would be six months, during which time it is believed sufficient eoal would be on hand to care for the needs of the United States. Senator Lodge railed attention to the fart that, while New England is actually suffering from lack of coal, enormous shipments of anthracite are being made to Canadian points. lie said tlyit it did not seem reasonable that with onr own people nnable to get eoal, sneh shipments should be made out of the country." Fires burning for years in eoal mines deep beneath the grnnnd are one of the unsolved problems in Illinois. A great many of those fires, walled up years ago. have caused trouble in Southern Illinois mines, according to Robert M. Medill, state director. The Donk properties close to Collinsville, the north mine of the Indiana Coal corporation at Witt and several others near Springfield recently sealed parts of their workings to prevent a spread of the fires, which burn without stopping in the underground chambers. One mine was ordered closed entirely. The fires start in the refuse which is left after the eoal is dug and are caused by a Process similar to spontaneous combustion. The miners call them gob fires," from the word applied by coal diggers to. the debris in the mine. They do not flare up in flame, hut burn slowly, smoldering for years nntil they eat themselves out of fuel. Chambers where these start become a mass of live red coals and mnst be sealed to keep out the air. The trouble is caused when a fire eats it way through a wall and threatens to break into the mine workings. Sometimes the smoldering coals eat up the supporting pillars, thus weakening the support for the ground above. They eannot be extinguished by water. It is the chemicalization resulting from the mixing of water and the refuse that causes the original. combustion. The only way to stop them is to remove the burning eoals.from the mine. Surveying Many Camp. Sanitary surreys of mining camps in Utah, Nevada, California, Arizona and the state of the Lake Superior district are being continued by the United States bureau of mines with the object of determining, insofar as possible, the effect of sanitary environment upon the health of the miner. Reports based on these, ,ralling attention to the especially good sanitary conditions and to the insanitary ones, will be written from time to time with recommendations for the improvement of the latter. These reports as completed, together with ratings based upon carefully determined weights or values for the various factors which affect the health in the mining ramps and communities surveyed, will be forwarded to the operators and other vitally concerned.
