WASHINGTON, Instead of continuing the steady increase which began early in April, production of soft eoal dropped back slightly during the week ended May The total output, including ligflistnite and eoal coked, is estimated at 7.957.000 torn, a decrease of forty-si- x thousand tons when compared to the week preceding. The precise cause of the decline is not clear. Loadings, however, on the last four days of the - mek compared favorably with other Production for the first hundred and twenty working days of the present year totals 152,421,000 tons. In point of production the present year is 29 per eent behind the war years of 1917 and 1918, and 23 per eent behind 1920, but it is even 7 per rent behind that of 1919. For the week ending May 14th the mines of Utah produced 49.4 per eent of full eapaeity. Total losses from all causes amounted to 50.6, transportation disability, 0.8; mine disability, 3L5, and no market, 46.3 per eent During the same period the Colorado mines worked 46.4 per cent fulltime capacity. No market losses 35.3 per eent. Production of anthraeite declined somewhat during the week ended May 21st. Estimates based on shipments over the nine principal anthraeite roads, and allowing for eoal used locally and for mine fuel, place the total output at 1,794,000 net tons. Comparisqp with the week immediately preceding showa this to be a decrease of 144,000 tons or 7.4 per eent. The cumulative output for the calendar year to date stands at 35,- 585.000 tons, which is about a million and tons ahead of 1920. West Shows Increase. Statements were received during the week ending May 14th from twenty-six Luudred and thirty-simines, which produced 4,801,637 tons or 61 per eent of the weeks output, exclusive of eoal coked. The reports are work assembled by correspondence of tabulation and analysis being the only part of the task that is jierForm-e- d personally by the staff of the geological survey. The mine reports for the week of May 14th reflect the increase in activity already noted in the figures of production. In a few district! shipping to tide or to the lakes the average running time was st length reached 10 per cent of fulltime. The average for the country aa a whole was only 44.4 per cent, however, and in spite of the increase over the preceding week when an average of 40.7 per cent was rejHtrt-e- d the industry remained in the grip of a profound depression. Lack of demand continued the only factor of importance limiting production. The most marked improvement occurred in Northern Ohio, where the average running time rose from 56.6 to 71.2 per eent. 'A marked increase occurred in the Pittsburg district also, which reported an average of 72.5 per eent as against 64.0 during the week preceding. Other districts to report improvement were Southern Ohio, the Panhandle of West Virginia, all of Southern West Virginia both high and low volatile the field. Hazard and the state of Indiana. In the Rocky Mountain States also production increased. With demand so weak the railroads had little difficulty in supplying the cars asked for, the reporta of transportation disability were local in character and negligible in importance. Losses of mine operating time ascribed to absenteeism of labor, which had increased slightly during the preceding week because of the observance of May Day, dropped down again to less than 1 per cent of fulltime capacity. weeks. three-quart- er x No Change In Coke. Practically no change occurred in the production of beehive coke during the week ended May 21st, and the industry remains in a state of profound depression. The total out- put is estimated at seventy thousand tons, an increase of one thousand tons over the revised figure for the week in the Con-- J preceding. nellsville region was 42,680 tons, decrease of six hundred and ten tons. Cumulative production for the calendar year to date etands at 3,059,000 tons, which is less than 36 per cent of that in 1920. Exports of bituminous coal from Hampton Roads continued to increase during the week ended May 21st. A total of 402.034 net tons was damped for foreign account, consisting of 309, Its an old saying that imirlcr will out, but it would tic ioom to the point to see the murderers snuffed out. WHITMORE INVENTORY IS FILED Small Crowd. Castle Gate has no baseball team in the league this year, but nevertheless there is an organization up at the scenic ramp that strolls out iuto the surrounding towns and cities or- easionally to play ball even if they do sometimes get away from home and do something else than carry out their declared good intention. Price 'a baseball team engaged this aggregation of Castle llaters in something last Monday afternoon which was (nut quite) advertised as a ball game. With the Decoration Day crowd on the streets all through the middle of the day there was an ideal chance to have gotten information in their hands which would have brought a good turnout for the rathef suddenly arranged game, but with an utter disregard for the otency of a little printers ink, and a sublime faith that three or four lettered signs would do the work, the two clubs assembled and went through their performance before a crowd of about thirty-on- e lieople. Maybe it's a good thing after all, for had the game been advertised and the truth in advertising slogan have been applied, somebody might have gotten in jail for calling You the exhibition a ball game. ran say that they got away with everything except murder and base- Neil M.
