The uranium constituent is of a bright canary yellow color, and the vanadium portion is commonly a PRICE CONFECTIONERY dull coalblack color. The uranium ore of this bright, yellow was f:rs discovered in western Colored j at Rock creek, in Montrose county, by .Gordon Kimball. This discovery was ramie in 1895. At first the ore was thought to be one of the common minerals, such as chloride of gold, or possibly sulphur, or oxide of iron. But the tests for these various classes did not give the usual reactions. Thomas L. McKee of Montrose took a sample of this ore to Charles Poulot, a graduate of the University of Paris, who waa then working for the firm of James MeBride & Co., engaged in mining copper ore in the La Sal mountains in southeastern Utah. Poulot was unable to make a classification of the ore, and he therefore sent a sample to the University of Paris. After some weeks Ponlot was informed that the ore was oxide of uranium, but the bright yellow waa a new color, jireviously unknown to uranium. Because of the difference this ore was classified as a new species, and it in honor of was named "carnotite Sadi Carnot, who was then president of France. Mme.- Curie followed up this clew and discovered and isolated the element of radium. This discovery was made in 1806 and 1897. A New Industry. When the report of these remarkable results came back to Montrose many claims were located by the prospectors and quite a substantial tonnage was mined. But there was no immediate and regular market for the ore, and the tired prospectors, one by one, abandoned their claims. Only one of them. Old Man Duling, who located the original Rock Creek claim, hung onto bis property, and finally sold it for $10,000 the only prospector who made any real money out of the early claims. On the present market radium is worth between $100,000 and $120,000 per gram. If we translate it into terms of ounces in order to make a comparison with gold, we find that radium is worth about $3,250,000 an ounce. Weight for weight, radium is worth more than 150,000 times as much as gold In my trips through the mining dis- tricts producing the earaotite ore A pipe wont burn your tongue if you smoke P. A.!
