Show THE SUE, FRIOE, UTAH EYE BY FRIDAY. PAGE SEE CARBON SCHOOLS COST LESS BUM TEAK Continued From Puce Ons.J nt last w imviileil in t lie estimate for year. Then interest to he fiui.1 on bouiU will lie nine thousand dollur more this year than last. It would he a little diffieult to figure the actual amount of these items, as the exact prnjHirtiun of teachers salaries could hardly he determined, and another instance is in the amount set aside for supplies. Last year the estimate was considerably too small, and this year this item actually allows an increase of a little more than a thousand dollars. But is may he said that with absolutely pnier calculation which allows for the increased school facilities provided for this year the decrease in cost of the schools for the year will he over 10 jier rent. Unfortunately the prujierty assessment valuations of the county have not increased in pnior-tio- n to the enlargement shown by the school sipulatiou. In fact the total valuations for the county have lteen made less than a year ago owing to the strenuous efforts to reduce taxation all along the line. So that, with the extra school work to be provided for and to take care of the deficit and other exiH'nsea as shown, leaving the actual net reduction of five thousand dollars, or nearly 3 cr rent, is more closely in keeping with assessment of the eouhty property, the reduction on which from a year ago was shown hv a rejturt printed iu The Sun last week to lie about 2 per cent. This will result in making the actual school lew practically the aame aa last year. But again in this connection, the school levy for a year ago was fixed at 6 mills by the county commissioners, while the budget of the board of education called for seven mills. So that in having the school levy no higher fur this year, the taxpayers can figure an actual saving of quite a little money. Teachers salaries this year will require more actual money than was estimated a year ago. Then it was that 1144,024 would ay this item. That more was actually paid last year than the estimated amount makes this years estimate with a h7.en more teachers on the job look favorable. The amount in the present budget ia $152,700. A rut of alsiut ten dollars on the average from each teacher monthly pay helped to keep this figure to its present proportions. Increase in school population, eltich would give the county the advaatuge of a larger auin to lie received on lr per capita amount of twenty-fiv- e for each pupil whch is turned over from the state school fund will not cut much of a figure, as the p for last year was made after the new enumeration, altlioii'.i the board's estimate was made previously. This increase was 033. In 191!) the school population was 3422. In 192)1 it was 3823, and Inst year it wis Schools showing the largest proportion of inerease were at I'rice, where with 730 in 1020 an increase for l'21 is noted of 120. At Castle (hue the figure of 210 for 1920 was inrr.' Md by 84 for 1921. Storm jumped fruit 18.1 in 1920 to 242 in 1921, an increase of 59. Other schnola showed increases in varying smaller ratios. Coming to the actual changes in the high school to be made through which four teachers will he eliminated, it is anauged that the niusie course and the foreign language studies will he combine an! handled by one teacher for the coming term, and this sceounls for the first deduction from the roster. The several history history classes will lie n arrongml as to ho hundl l by one lens teacher than was required Inst year. thletirs for hoys and bills will lie taken over by one teacher instead of two as for last year. The principal takes on extra class work. Mime doubling up of classes to he taken also I y ethers of the teachers, eliminating another teHrher. In the grade schools it is found impossible to cut this teaching force. In fact it is here that the doxen or so extra teachers are required. At the reeent state meet of Utah teachers a suggestion war hr that in conformity will) the general move for retrenchment, it should lie put up to the school board of the state that to give all teachers an average of thirty pupils would cut down the teaching force. This yroMsitinn is deadwood so far as Carbon county is concerned in Price, Sunnvside, IMkt, fitorrs and other schools of this district a tbeverage is already up to about forty. In fact it is even higher than that at Winter Quarters. Figuring a? the prsent fine the total nundier of teachers will he aim t a hundred and twenty-five- .
