Show SCHOOL NEWS PAGE A4 SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS Senior Night celebrating SSHS Boys Baseball STUDENT REPORTER: LARISSA PEARCE South Summit had the pleasure of hosting South Summit boys baseball Senior Night April, 28 2015. The boys were honored this year by their teammates and coaches. The team is lead this year by Head Coach Mike Howard and Assistant Coaches Denver Hansen and Joe Santos. South Summit boys baseball was lead by 3 Varsity Captains this year, Daxton Hansen, Bracken Santos and Hunter Ries, leading them to 10 victories and 4 defeats throughout the 2015 season. Seniors this year are Daxton Hansen, the son of Nile and Kymm Hansen. Daxton has been in baseball for 4 years playing varsity Pitcher, Outfield and First Base. I will miss the long bus rides with my team. His favorite memory was his first batting at varsity. Bracken Santos is the son of Joe and Stacey Santos. Bracken has been playing 4 years as Varsity Shortstop. The thing I will miss most is getting to be around my friends everyday at practice, on the bus, and playing games. The best memory I have of baseball is taking region freshman year. Hunter Ries, is the son of Greg and Ginger Ries. Hunter has played 4 years alongside his friends as Varsity Second Base. The thing I will miss most is being with all of my friends, and playing the game I love. The best memory that I have is when we took region my freshman year. Edward Schroeder, is the son of Wendy and Edward Schroeder is new to the team playing his first year in the outfield. It was great having him on the team and wished we got him sooner. Eddies favorite memory was getting to sleep on long bus rides and making new friends. He will miss being with friends and playing the game. Surrounded by friends and family, these boys will be dearly missed for all the years they have put their heart into the game. These players will have a bright future for all their hard work and dedication. South Summit FFA results Eighteen South Summit FFA members competed at the Utah FFA Career Development Events on April 2122. Congratulations to the State Champion Meats Team consisting of Paden Woolstenhulme, Kendall Dick, and Porter Fox. Along with this team honor, Paden was awarded the high individual of the competition and Kendall Dick received 2nd high individual. They will be competing at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, KY in October. Also competing was the Horse Judging team consisting of Fallon Richmond, Kiersten Hancock, Ashley Keyes, Wilder Thompson, Sidney Burrell, and Kyler Dick. They received a gold rating. The Livestock team also received a gold rating. These members included Skyler McCormick, Kassidee Black, Jace Atkinson, and Broughton Flygare. The Vet Science team received a Bronze rating. Members Ashley Keyes, Sierra Wagner, Autumn Tuttle and Wilder Thompson made up SSHS's squad. The Nursery / Landscape team received a Silver rating. Broughton Flygare, Paden Woolstenhulme, Jace Atkinson and Skyler McCormick competed here. The Floriculture team received a Bronze rating. Mariah Bergen, Hannah Hatch, and Fallon Richmond comprised this group. The Farm Business team also received a Bronze rating. Cole Sweat, Sierra Wagner, and Autumn Tuttle competed in this area. Congratulations to these students! State Road Cleanup The South Summit High School Interact Club held a road cleanup on State Road 32 last Thursday at the north entry to Kamas. The work was dedicated to honor Malone Sheeran, a South Summit High School student who died three years ago on that highway. Student volunteers were lined up from the north entrance of High Star Ranch to the Blazzard lumber mill. The students met at an apple tree planted for Malone by the SSHS Debate Team, and everyone helped with the trash collecting. Members of the community also assisted, including the Sheeran family, 1 , 2015 North Summit School District employees retire Mrs. Shanna Adkins, North Summit Middle School Teacher will retire as of May 2015. Mrs. Adkins has worked 17.5 years in North Summit School District. She also worked 2 years in Jordan District. Mrs. Adkins has been a dedicated, motivated, and hard working employee in our district, while accomplishing many educational needs for the students of North Summit School District. The students, employees and patrons of this district have appreciated her continued efforts in educating our students. Mrs. Adkins has a very genuine love and compassion for the students at North Summit, as well as the students have a true love and compassion for her. Everyone will miss her. Shanna said choosing to retire has been a difficult decision, as she has loved teaching and the years have certainly flown by. She has encouraged her students to continue striving as life-long learners, and always work to their fullest potential for success. She told the students: "Remember," When things go wrong as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all up hill. When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must, but DON" T YOU QUIT!! Mrs. Adkins' future plans are to enjoy each day as it comes. She wants to attend the activities of her grandchildren, because they are her top priority. She will love them, and of course spoil them. We want to express our sincere appreciation to Mrs. Adkins for her years of service and dedication to North Summit School District. We wish her and her family a lot of enjoyment and success. The North Summit Board of Education accepted Mrs. Adkins' retirement and expressed their sincere appreciation for her years of service and dedication to our district. She will be missed immensely. Again, thank you for your services to North Summit School District. We will miss you! Cindy Christensen, "Mrs. C" North Summit Elementary School Teacher will retire as of May 2015. She has been a role model and enhanced the learning of students in many ways. There have been many changes in education throughout Mrs. Christensen's career, and she has worked very hard to keep abreast of those changes. She has taught 29 years at North Summit and also in Tabiona and Duchesne. Mrs. "C" has been a dedicated, motivated, and hard working employee in our district, while accomplishing many educational needs for the students of North Summit School District. The students, employees and patrons of this district have appreciated her continued efforts in educating our students. Everyone will miss her. We want to express our sincere appreciation to Mrs. Christensen for her years of service and dedication to North Summit School District. We wish her and her family a lot of enjoyment and success. Mrs. Christensen said she is too old to keep up. It's time. It has been a wonderful job. I always knew I wanted to be an elementary teacher. She also said she has never regretted her choice as a teacher, well almost never. I love, love, love children. Her future plans include golfing, surviving and enjoying life. Again, thank you for your services to North Summit School District. We will miss you! North Summit FFA brings home State Winning Titles BY COREE JACOBSON Extra! Extra! Read all about it! North Summit FFA has twelve state champions and we want to shout it! The North Summit FFA Chapter traveled to the Utah State CDE competition held on April 21-22. Various teams competed in various competitions and many brought home state winning titles. The Farm Business Team, consisting of Reagan Rees, Daniel Stephens, Shelby Geilman, and Jericho Robbins, won first place in their competition with Reagan winning High Individual, Shelby winning Second High Individual, and Daniel winning third high individual. The Farm Business Team will compete at nationals held in Louisville, Kentucky this fall! North Summit's Dairy Team, Chaynee Roath, Chase Dallin, Seth Brown, and Kassidy Jones brought home a state title last week, too! Seth Brown also won Second High Individual in the Dairy Judging competition. This is a very young team and we are extremely proud of them for putting in the effort they did, and reaping what they sowed. The Dairy Team will accompany the Farm Business Team at National Convention in the fall. Our final state winning team was the Horse Judging Team consisting of Emily Donaldson, Mckaylie Richins, Calissa Robinson, and Coree Jacobson. Mckaylie took home the bronze pin with Third High Individual, and Coree took home the silver pin with Second High Individual. The Horse Judging Team will travel to Louisville, Kentucky in the fall to compete on a national level. We aren't done yet! North Summit's Dairy Foods team, Cheyenne Young, Arielle Hunsaker, Lizz Mortenson, and Kyler Kershaw placed second in the Dairy Foods Competition, with Lizz receiving the gold pin as High Individual. Our marketing team, Daniel Stephens, Chloe Richins, and Reagan Rees, placed third overall in their competition. The Ag Mechanics team consisting of Jayce Richins, Ethan Brown, Cole Peterson, and Daren Richins, ended up fourth in the overall placings. The North Summit Livestock Team also represented our chapter well at the 2015 Utah State CDEs. We are immensely proud of all those who participated and we can't wait for those who won to compete on the national level in Louisville, Kentucky! South Summit High School Presents, "A Night at The Theatre" The theatre students of South Summit high school have been working hard rehearsing for this years Spring Production and are excited to present, A Night at The Theatre! A Night at The Theatre celebrates the emotive world of theatre through showcasing a variety of scenes and musical pieces from Broadway Musicals & Plays. Come join them as they dance, sing, and present scenes from such titles as; Newsies, Seusical, Adams Family, Barefoot in the Park, Sweet Charity, Chorus Line, STUDENT REPORTER SKYLIER LEAVITT MAY and alumni who had been friends with Malone and her family. It was wonderful to see so many people come together for a good cause. The Interact Club and the SS Track Team formed the heart of the cleanup. Because so many people showed up the entire dedicated area was cleaned in a short amount of time. Jekyl and Hyde, Chess, Title of Show and many other Broadway favorites. Directed by Loralie Pearce and starring; Kendall Pollard, Jonathan Whitmore, Rachel Gerlach, Courtney Hawkins, Taylor Hadlock, Tessa Scheuer, Catilin Scheuer, Paul Sorensen, Ayla Pollick, Aspen Russell, Chale Pollick, Alexia Daugaard, Alex Mexa, Dani Meza, and Isaac Harry with Erin Petersen, Mary Watson, and Mariah Bergen as their amazing Tech Crew, A Night at The Theatre will open Tuesday, May 5, at 6:30 and runs each subsequent night May 6, 7 and 8. Doors open at 6:00, admission prices are $5.00 for students and seniors, and $7 for Adults, pay at the door, there will be water and treats available during intermission as well as before and after the show.
