Southern Utah University was the setting of the annual American Legion Auxiliary's Girls State. Officiating and speaking was, Summit County's own Bradie Jill Jones, daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Bryce and Cara Jones of Henefer. Last year family friend, Joan Fawcett, mentioned to Bradie's mom "She should get down there and run for Governor. That girl would make it for sure!" When Bradie heard that that she thought, "Oh, Joan is so nice but I don't stand a chance. There are hundreds of high school girls selected to attend Girls State from across Utah a few schools smaller than North Summit but most MUCH bigger! So the possibility of winning the office of Governor was more than I could imagine. She spoke to groups including the American Legion State Convention. Her family has many Veterans. "I've also had the sweet privilege of meeting Veterans around our state. I can't express how much their sacrifices mean to me. My Uncle Shell was a POW in WW II. I've listed to his stories...I don't take lightly the things the Legion stands for." When asked if she has political aspirations she replied "Oh for sure! I want to make a civic my civic contribution." "I am indebted to Post #93 LeRoy E. Benson for giving me the opportunity of attending Girls State. Not just because of the title I earned but for the knowledge I gained. I'm grateful for the chance to share my passion for patriotism, hard won freedom and sacrifice." Bradie is a daughter of a Veteran. She has lived through a year and a half with a father in a war zone. The American Legion Auxiliary will always be a part of my life. To commemorate the Boy Scout Trip results in three injuries CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor Search and Rescue (SAR) crews from Uinta and Summit County responded to a call reporting that a boy was hit from a falling tree and had sustained injuries. They had to locate them through GPS coordinates. The youth were camping in the Uinta Mountains south of Evanston when a tree fell, causing head injuries, broken arm and leg which none were life-threatening. There were also two unrelated injuries from the same Scout troop, in which a leader experienced chest pains and another Scout fell from a climbing wall, fracturing his wrist. They were transported by ambulance to Evanston Regional Hospital for treatment. first Governor from our area, the Post presented an American Legion Pendent inscribed with "Post #93" - to wear close to my heart. Helen Thiriot of American Legion Auxiliary Post # 93 remarked; "Bradie Jill Jones, who was one of four girls attending Girls State from North Summit was elected to the highest office at the gathering - that of Governor of Girls State. Bradie has a personality, which helped her to meet other people, and be interested and caring. Bradie has many creative talents which helped her to organize, and conduct meetings and to become wellloved and respected and has helped the other Girls State Citizens to grow in knowledge and patriotism. The information given was that Lawrence "Larry" Fitlow (age 67) was last seen in the Goblin Valley State Park in Emery County, Utah, on May 27, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. As Lawrence was last seen in the Goblin Valley State Park, the Emery County Sheriff's Office will be handling the investigation and all media and public contact. Lawrence Fitlow was last seen driving a 37' Hurricane motor home with a "Seniors Gone Wild" decal on the back and is accompanied by his dog "Gizmo". The Leaf Dancer statue is dressed as a Pioneer Woman this week as the first of ten costumes of the statue, which is part of the Artscape public art program in Coalville. |
