Show AROUND THE COUNTY MAY 24, 2013 SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS Two retiring employees from North Summit District honored Mrs. Lyn London, North Summit Elementary teacher, has announced her retirement. Mrs. London has worked 33 years in North Summit School District. She also worked two years in Ogden and one year in Morgan. Mrs. London has been a dedicated, motivated, and hard working employee in our district, while accomplishing many educational needs for the students of North Summit School District. The students, employees, and patrons of our district have appreciated her continued efforts in educating our students. Mrs. London has a very genuine love and compassion for the students at North Summit, as well as the students have a true love and compassion for her. Everyone will miss her. Lyn said, "I can still kick a football and go down the slides, but I can't win a foot race anymore, so it's time to turn it over to others." She also said she has many wonderful memories of school programs, science lessons that made us learn and laugh, watching kids catch on to reading, and getting them to love math. Mrs. London wants to express to the parents that she has appreciated their support. She has made so many friends while teaching at North Summit. Every friendship has been wonderful. Mrs. London's future plans will include sleeping in until 6 a.m., taking a couple of years to sort through my school stuff, doing the needed painting, fixing and updating her home, keeping up on her yard and garden, quilting, doing family history, helping senior neighbors, and visiting my children and their families. Lyn is planning a trip to London in October. After her trip, she will wait and see what adventures life presents. She also plans to smile and enjoy what comes her way. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Mrs. London for her years of service and dedication to North Summit School District. We wish her and her family a lot of enjoyment and success. She will be missed very much! Mrs. Denise Stuart, North Summit School District custodian, will retire as of May 31. She has been with the district the past 20 years as a custodian. Denise was assigned as a middle school custodian. She has remained in the middle school for the past 20 years. Denise has been a dedicated and hard working employee. She has played a major role in organizing, cleaning and maintaining the buildings. She has been able to have a genuine working relationship with the employees and students of the district. The students, faculty, and administration would like to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to Denise for her years of service and dedication to North Summit School District. Denise said she is looking forward to spending more time with her family, going on vacations and not worrying about getting back. Thank you Denise for all you have done for North Summit School District. You will be missed! Summit County Opens Communication Lines by hiring new professional Summit County Manager Bob Jasper today announced the hiring of a full-time Public Affairs employee, with the main goal to improve overall communications throughout the County. Jasper stated, "I am pleased to announce the hire of Summit County resident Julie Booth to fill this new position for the County. Her experience in both communications and public policy make it easy for her to step into this new role and establish effective communication strategies for Summit County, as well as helping to disseminate complex information to the public." A former Director of Communications for a large industry trade association, Ms. Booth brings to the position almost 20 years of work experience, including ten years in the nation's Capital working under two different Governors' in state Washington D.C. offices. It was in this capacity that Booth wrote press releases, weekly Washington Updates on Federal/ State Affairs, and handled all external communications to the constituency. A Utah native, Ms. Booth is a graduate of the University of Utah and lives in Jeremy Ranch with her husband Richard and their three daughters. "I am excited about the opportunity to help bring clear and concise communications to County residents," Ms. Booth said. "Although there will be significant work involved in bringing the County up to speed on more contemporary forms of communicating, I look forward to the challenge and am eager to begin working on improvements." In addition to modernizing communication methods, Jasper stated Ms. Booth will also be tasked with defining cohesive county positions on various topics, which can be tricky with independent council views. Jasper believes Ms. Booth's years of work experience on Capitol Hill leaves her well equipped to perform this task. Ms. Booth will step into the new County role on June 7. Jay Reidhead gave a final Inspirational Thought and members of the South Summit High School Class of 2013 sang the School Song for the first time as alumni. Graduation Caps were tossed in to the air as the final words, "Fight on for SS High" filled the stadium. Family and friends filled the field for congratulations KAMAS CITY IS SPONSORING A CITY CLEAN UP JUNE 6, 7, 8, 2013 Blotter • An initial report of a drug case stemming from a suspicious vehicle. The officer noted a vehicle parked in a parking lot with the engine running. The female inside appeared to be passed out. He made contact with the driver and immediately noted a glass pipe with a white residue in her hands. The officer knocked on the window and was able to get her to wake up. The female was taken into custody and a search of her vehicle found heroin, meth, marijuana and multiple items of drug paraphernalia. • A man was found to have three outstanding warrants after he was discovered behind the wheel of a vehicle that had been parked next to a pump at the closed gas station for more than 30 minutes. The vehicle was secured at the scene after its owner was notified and advised to respond. • Deputy made contact with subject for warrants in Kamas. During the arrest, subject passed off a meth pipe to his nephew. The nephew then attempted to conceal the pipe inside the vehicle. A probable cause search revealed the pipe which contained meth and several paraphernalia items. The Deputy booked the subject and released his nephew on a juvenile referral to his father for obstruction. • During a traffic stop it was found that the passenger had and open bottle of vodka that she had been drinking. She was cited for open container. • Union Pacific Rail Road reported a theft in the Echo area. The suspects apparently cut and stole some wire from the switch controls along with other equipment. The case is apparently being handled by their own police and was reported to Summit County for information only. Riley Atkinson awarded State CTE Scholarship AMY REGAN Special to the News 1 11111111111111 South Summit senior Riley Atkinson was awarded a full year tuition scholarship to Utah Valley University from the Utah State Office of Education CTE program at an awards banquet on May 1 at Salt Lake Community College. The Career and Technical Education Scholarships are for outstanding CTE students who are planning on attending a post-secondary institution in a CTE area that is a two-year Associate Degree program or less or those who are planning to teach in a CTE area. Over one hundred scholarships were awarded to students who will go into fields such as business and marketing, information technology, health sciences and skilled and technical sciences. Riley was the only student from South Summit to be awarded. He plans to go to UVU to study fire science and emergency medical technology Riley Atkinson and Mark Eaton, who and pursue a career as an EMT / Firefighter. Ms. McNeil is proud of Riley, and notes that he is one of the few high school students who have an idea of what he wants to do with his life. "He has been able to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the high school that will help him further his goals." she commented. Riley has also served as an intern with the South Summit Fire District, and even painted the Kamas Fire Station as his Eagle Scout project. Riley comes by his interest in firefighting honestly. He is the grandson of Janet Atkinson, who was South Summit Fire District's first female volunteer firefighter and in 2010 was named the first female president of the Utah State Firemen's Association. Riley is the son of A Jay and Janalee Marchant and lives in Francis. Alexandra Maxfield and Sadie Boyer both placed 2nd in the state and Anne Hendry placed 3rd. The Summit County Farm Bureau offers scholarships to local seniors to further their education in agricultural related fields.
