Applications are due no later than May 27, 2011! Rodeo Queen Clinic The sand is in place, bags ready - now...just the wait is beginning! It is with anticipation that we fill these bags with sand -and hoping that the inevitable will not happen - we will be ready. That is how life is - watching, waiting, getting prepared, and staying prepared. How many times have you heard "...do you have your 72 hour kit ready? or... "It has never flooded this high - we will have to start all over again! Not a pleasant thought, but being prepared brings peace of mind! The fact is - life is just this way - day by day - we must be prepared, always getting ready... for something. The kids growing up - the graduation and then college - the purchase of a new home, verses renting! It is not easy - but is necessary - being prepared. Getting the mind ready for the next phase of life - that is what we are doing. Sometimes we can go back to our "normal way of life" - but usually not! Earthquakes, floods, they are the "not being able to predict" things in life. But is anything...watching and waiting - that is what life is all about. Sometimes getting prepared is hard - as we are not always sure what we are preparing for. Are we going to be alone with the next phase of our lives, or with one's family? Yes - the sandbags are ready, the pile of sand is ready - now...being able to put them together and create the next phase of life - ongoing and unpredictable - that is what we must do! When the floods are over then there will be another "thing" to get prepared for. Watching and waiting - once more - going a different direction in life! Recycling Tip For The Week... Help the oceans by choosing sustainable fish Fish make up the world's largest wild food harvest and provide a vital source of protein as well as livelihoods for many families. Globally, more than 120 million people are dependent on fish for all or part of their incomes, particularly in developing nations. Animals such as whales, dolphins and seabirds also rely on fish populations as their primary food source. Fish are a vital part of marine ecosystems and are key to the essential services that these aquatic systems provide. Over the last century commercial fisheries have drastically reduced fish populations and altered the world's marine ecosystems. On a global level, most fisheries are poorly managed and fish stocks have been fully exploited, over-exploited, or even depleted. Put simply, what we take out of the ocean, as seafood is greater than what the ocean can sustainably provide. We are not only facing a decline in the capacity of our oceans to provide a sustainable food source but we are destroying the basic ecological processes and food chains that life depends on. Sustainable fish are fish species whose stocks are not in danger and which provide excellent alternatives to current popular fish choices. Choosing a sustainable fish will help take pressure off fish like cod, tuna, salmon, haddock, and prawns. If you enjoy eating fish, it's very worthwhile to do your bit to help conserve fish stocks by considering these alternative choices. There are many organizations devoted towards raising awareness of sustainable fishing and consumption practices. GoodCatch.org is an excellent online resource providing practical information for those looking to improve their seafood sustainability. A great smartphone app is Seafood Watch created by the Monterey Bay Aquarium. More info at www.montereybayaquarium.org / cr / seafood watch. aspx. Recycle Utah, your community non-profit drop off recycling center, provides these weekly tips. Visit their website for more information - www.recycleutah.org.
