Maria Barndt, Park City's Landscape Gardener, put together the Arbor Day Celebration. She and Loretta Haslock, working with the Tree City Recertification, recently attended the awards ceremony where Park City received their 18th Tree City USA award in Murray last month. Maria and Insa Reipen with Recycle Utah met the volunteers at 9 AM at City "...we picked this area to clean up because Park where they served we walk here often" breakfast in the morning and passed out garbage bags for the city-wide clean up day. They were anxious to help out with the Annual "Pride in Your Park" / Arbor Day Celebration for Park City's Tree City USA celebration. Following the breakfast volunteers could be seen walking up and down the streets with the large orange bags gathering the trash tossed by careless passerby's which had been lying under the snow. "We enjoy 'making a difference', stated one couple from Old Town as they canvassed the area around the new Bonanza walking Maria Barndt - "...we will hand out seedling tunnel just below the tennis to plant in honor of Arbor Day..." courts. Others from surrounding areas also were present to assist in planting these large trees, bringing their shovels and lots of energy! The trees have added a touch of class to the parkway, and will be enjoyed by the community for years to come. Thanks to Summit County for providing sack lunches and drinks for everyone following their morning of tree planting! A Nissan Pickup, with a 20-year old driver, Hayley O'Brian, from Salt Lake City area, tried to swerve to miss the on-coming vehicle, then headed into the median and rolled. There were three passengers in the truck. One of the passengers, Joseph Henrie, age 20, from Oklahoma, was killed. Henrie was a University of Utah geography student and Oklahoma native - not wearing a seatbelt. Park City Medical Center and the third was transported to the University of Utah. No other vehicles involved. The call came in to the SC Dispatch at nearly 8 p.m. The first officer responded hearing the call at 2000. Allegedly, reported by UHP officials, the Gallegos vehicle continued on one mile to the Travelle's rest area, where the driver reoriented herself and came back West in the westbound lanes - passing the accident scene. Troopers were still responding as the Olds passed them, and due to the westbound lanes being elevated, responding units did not see the Olds as it went by. A Summit County Deputy was set up near Silver Creek Canyon, watching for the suspect Olds vehicle. The deputy saw the Olds and immediately detected a driving pattern and stopped the vehicle. The deputy held the driver until a UHP Trooper arrived. Gallegos was booked in the SC jail and allegedly charged with automobile Homicide, driving the wrong way on a oneway street, driving with open alcohol container and DUI. The driver of the pickup truck is also being investigated for possible DUI.
