The Friends of Animals Utah (FOAU) facility is a breathtaking sight as one steps into the foyer through the large doors of what outside appears to be a huge "barn"! But not so! The foyer and reception / administration area leads into rooms, play areas, kennels, cats (and "kittens" dream" room, surgical facilities for spay / neuter clinic, education room, hallways with animal decor on the walls, a break-room for those who are working (volunteering) their time with the animals, ...and - an outdoor patio with donors names and their "family pets" and paw prints on the brick walkway even care-taker's quarters so that someone can be available 24 / 7! "This is only the beginning", stated Julie Joyce, Media Relations for Friends of Animals Utah. "We have plans and acreage for horse facilities, too. This won't happen right away, but it is in the plans!" The tours and open house on Saturday, June 26th, showed several hundred people interested in the facility which has only been open long enough to get it ready for the open house! One of the volunteers was astounded that the items in the "doggy indoor play area" which had to be moved into storage made it there before Saturday! "I worked four hours Education Center...looking through the window is the surgical room. Faith Maloney - Kanab - and Founder of Kanab's Friend's of Animals - brings her 7-month old rescued puppy to "cut" the ribbon! just hauling things to the storage on the second level", stated Jim O'Neil, President of the Board. "It took several of us many hours to clean up the space for visitors to come and see the new shelter! We have about 19 Board Members at this time, and still room for more," he went on to say. "It is a great organization! All of us are volunteers!" Volunteers also donated doors, windows, furnace, cabinets, surgical equipment and lights, kennels, cat room equipment (which is already housing several cats at this time), fences, gates, stoves, and many other items, including labor and discounted services, that made it possible for the 16,000 square feet of finished space (footprint is 12,500 sq. ft.) to be ready for occupancy at this time. The building had its groundbreaking back in October of 2007, started construction in June of 2008, and opened the doors on June 26, 2010, for the Ribbon-cutting Ceremony! The cost of the building is approximately $125.00 per square foot, or $2 million - of which they had to take out a loan of $1 million to complete the project at this time. Fundraisers will be held in order to pay off this loan throughout the future. The water is provided through a 400 foot well drilled for each lot with 5-acre feet of water leased for each. It is tapped in the natural gas line which runs through the property. Solar panels and radiant heaters run throughout the building. The land was purchased by former board member who made it possible "for FOAU to acquire it via a partial donation." Rescue and Rehab Ranch is a support facility to Furburbia. Furburbia will remain the retail adoption location. "New and expanded programs at the Ranch include education programs, children's day camps, and partnership with Peace House, Summit County disaster preparedness program / no /low cost spay and neuter and Canines with a Cause." Thanks to a generous and anonymous $100,000 matching grant, donations will be matched up to this amount. "The organization is dedicated to saving the lives of adoptable pets throughout Summit and Wasatch Counties, the Salt Lake City area, and beyond, stated Joyce. "In 2009, FOAU rescued and placed more than 800 dogs and cats in homes through Furburbia, located at Tanger Outlet Center in Park City, Utah." "Now in its 20th year, demand is increasing, "stated Cathy King, Executive Director of FOAU. "We have some very exciting new rehabilitation programs under development already which will enable us to have an even greater impact on the community, remarked Ms. King. There were 43 provisionals mailed postmarked the day before election day, or else filled out to certify and verify that they now live in this district. For their vote to count they must update and prove that they live in this area. There were 12 of those 43 which were disqualified due to the fact that they either have never registered in Utah to vote, or have not registered anywhere. The forms they filled out will make it possible for them to vote in the General Election in November, however. They can go online to check their status if they so desire. Absentee ballots received that are postmarked on the day of election or later are never opened, they will be kept for 21 months, and then destroyed. The provisionals are opened by the members of the County Council, and verified that they are filled out correctly and checked in the proper box for casting their vote. The provisional is then scanned by the computer and tallied with the totals of election day, June 22, of the Primary Election in Summit County. Official percentages and numbers of votes are as follows: Senate(R), Bridgewater 1078, 54.97%; Lee 88.3, 45.03%. State House 25(D) Briscoe 176, 51.01%; Kaye 169, 48.99%; State House 53(R), Brown 1071, 64.29%; Hellander 595, 35.71%; South Summit School Board #4: Marchant 52, 27.66% (out of general election); Hardman 82, 43.62%, Weller 54, 28.72%.
