Francis 2nd Ward Bears visit The News The Bear den from Cub Scout Troop 4625 (Francis 2nd Ward) took a field trip to the Summit County News office on May 5. They were able to learn all about the process of gathering information and printing up a newspaper. Among the highlights of the trip were listening to the police scanner and looking up the news during the time they were born. The boys had a great time and appreciate the opportunity to see the news in action! Thank you! The South Summit Boys Soccer team won their State QuarterFinal game this past Saturday against Mount Vernon in a 2-1 sudden victory overtime and advance on to the Semi-Finals for the second year in a row. South Summit dominated their opponent for most of the match but still found themselves behind at halftime by a score of 0-1 due to a well placed shot from Yoshia Kawamura of Mount Vernon on one of the few times that the ball was on the SS half of the field. The kick just slipped past the outstretched arms of the SS Goalkeeper, Devin Smith as he made a valiant effort to prevent the goal. During the second half, the Wildcats again kept the ball on the Mount Vernon side of the field and finally succeeded in getting the ball into the net when Casey Lundgreen kicked the ball into the goal after Mount Vernon’s goalie came off the line to prevent a previous attempt. The Wildcats then tried several shots in the remaining minutes of regulation but were unable to convert one of them into a goal. As the sudden victory OT period began, the tensions were high as SS fans were witnessing the second year in a row that the Wildcats had played against Mount Vernon in the State playoffs and the game had gone into OT. During the OT, SS continued to keep offensive pressure on the Patriots by keeping the ball on the Mount Vernon side of the field with the exception of one short period of time when the opponent was able to cross midfield. Approximately four or five minutes into the OT period, Josh King kicked the ball down the left sideline to James Page, who crossed the ball to the right side of the field where Mason Brown ran it down in the right corner and sent a nice cross in front of and just past the far goalpost, where Page had positioned himself for the winning header that bounced off of the ground, past the goal keeper, and into the net. Wildcat fans were ecstatic as they celebrated, and at the same time breathing a collective sigh of relief after witnessing such a dominating performance by their team but still needing OT to seal the win and head to the semi-finals. They play their Semi-Final game on Friday, May 8th at 1:45 p.m. at Jordan High School, which is just east of State Street on about 9800 South in Sandy. They will need all the fan support they can get to gain a victory over the #1 ranked Rowland Hall Winged Lions! Go Wildcat Soccer!
