FFA REPORTER: ZAINA DEWEESE Winner Winner Chicken Dinner! On Monday, May 4, the FFA held an awards banquet for all the FFA members and their parents. At the banquet we had an awards presentation and a great Dutch oven dinner. One of the awards given out is the Outstanding Member award. This award is given to the members that are dedicated and actively involved in the FFA. To receive this award you must attend activities through out the year. Rocky Roath was the freshman that received this award. Rocky is involved in livestock judging, multiple activities, has received the Green-Hand Degree, and most recently attended State Convention. Rocky is always willing to help whenever he is needed. 545 So. Taylor received her chapter degree and also attended State Convention where she was involved in Courtesy Corps. Helping run State Convention. Colton Joiner is a junior who won this award. Colton has been involved in the FFA for three years. He’s attended many activities and received awards including his State Degree. Chase has been involved in Meats Judging for three years and this year at State Convention they won first place and get to go to Nationals to compete. Chase attends activities whenever he can! The Outstanding Service award goes to Ryker Snyder and Ryan Hortin. These committee chairs have stepped it up and have been outstanding in their service toward the chapter. They have been hard workers and are always willing to help their fellow members. They’ve set an excellent example to other FFA members. The Honorary Member award is to recognize the efforts of people from our community. The people who received this award where Don Snyder, RJ Spencer, Jerre Holmes, and Sterling and MaryAnn Banks. Thanks for all your support through the year! The Star Greenhand and Chapter Award is given to students who have received their green hand and chapter degrees and excelled in their SAE projects. To win this award the students had to fill out a written application and submit a copy of their record book. The third runner up for the green hand degree is Kaydee Bowen. Her SAE consists of breaking her two-year-old filly. She plans to do all the work and compete in county horse shows. The second runner up is Kylie Batt. Kylie grows a vegetable garden for her SAE project. Her project has helped her to learn about all different kinds of plants. The first runner up is Nakayla Vernon. Nakayla shows hogs. She learned how to care for, and be responsible for her hogs. The winner of the Star Green hand award is Bailie Richins. Bailie’s SAE project includes raising and showing lambs at the county fair. The third runner up for the Star Chapter award is Ethan Young. He raises steers for the summit county fair and also works on Ensign Ranch. The second runner up is Cassidy Stephens. She raises and shows market steers at the summit county fair. The first runner up is Josh Ovard. Josh raises and shows lambs at the county fair and also works on the Dawson mink ranch. The winner of the Star Chapter award is Marty Wright. He raises and milks dairy goats. He also shows pigs at the county fair and during the summer he works on the family ranch. The Step Up and Stand Out Award recognizes FFA members that have stepped up to the plate and achieved in leadership in the FFA. These members have gone the extra mile in rep- resenting and truly reflect the national FFA theme of the step up and stand out. The members who received this award were Ashlee Gunn, Darby Richins, Brittany Brown, Erica Birk, Gage Carlson, Taylor Whitworth, Dentry McQueen, Amber Judd, Stevin Sommerville, and Anna Donaldson. The Eagle Leadership Award is given to FFA members who have gone above and beyond their call of duty. They have stepped up and stood out. Chase Rees was the FFA member who received this award. Chase stood above all the others. He helped plan and organize FFA events and took care of many things with out being asked. He is capable of achieving unreachable heights. Awesome Job Chase! At the end of the night the officers presented the reflections that was based on this years theme: Gold and Blue What’s In It For You. After reflections the 20082009 officers received their retiring plaques and the new 2009-2010 officers were put into office. We would like to thank everyone who helped with the Dutch oven dinner. We would also like to thank Mrs. Katie Silcox and the 2008-2009 officers for all the hard work they’ve done this year! Great job NSHS Track Team FREE Curbside Delivery with orders over $500 ( 25 Mile Limit ) Early Friday morning, May 1st, NS track team headed to Provo for the highly competitive BYU invitational. The competition was excellent as teams from Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, and Idaho battled it out. North Summit Girls came out victorious even though they only had one first place finish. Jill Morrill, Cassidy Stephens, Dentry McQueen and Erica Birk brought home first place in the medley relay. However, The team trophy was won by balanced scoring throughout the whole meet as the Braves had many athletes place in almost every event. The women's 4x400 team of McCall Richins, Tylynn Bingham, Jenalyn Thiriot, and Holly Bosworth ran an excellent time on the last race of the day. Their second place finish sealed the win. Sofia Stephens and Samantha Nicoles represented North Summit in the short Sprints. Jenalyn Thiriot and Eirca Birk scored in the distance. Kylee Adams placed in the Shot put, and Hayley Richins scored in both hurdle races. The Braves collected the most points in the long jump where Sam Nicoles, Kendra Richins and Tylynn Bingham all placed. The Braves are hoping that they can carry this momentum into the state meet May 16 and 17 at BYU. Come down to Provo and support the Braves in their quest for the title! Region 14 Track and Field championships were held at NS on Wednesday. Art Contest Graduates From UVU Winner! Cassidy Stephens STUDENT WRITER: AMELIA FITCH Cassidy Stephens, a sophomore at North Summit High School won an art contest sponsored by Zero Fatalities, a group which promotes safe driving practices. Her winning artwork will be featured in a 12 month calendar. Winners were chosen from high school art students throughout Utah. Cassidy said, “I was very shocked and excited when I found out!” Great job Cassidy; we’re so proud of you! Demsey McQueen Burtenshaw Demsey McQueen Burtenshaw, daughter of Ken and Deanna McQueen, of Hoytsville, graduated with Baccalaureate Degree in Technology Management with an emphasis in Art and Visual Communications and Cum Laude honors from Utah Valley University on May 1. While at UVU, she was elected for induction into Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society, offered only to the top 7.5 percent of students, as both a junior and senior. She was also one of three students chosen to speak at the annual 2008 UVU foundation dinner for scholarship recipients. The dinner included all of the foundation board, UVU president, vice presidents and departmental heads as well as many community financial supporters. Demsey recalled, “Lavell Edwards came to talk with me about my speech afterwards. It was a neat opportunity to meet a football legend; he is not just a BYU fan you know. He also has a deep love for Utah Valley University! It is an experience I will always cherish.” Demsey would like to thank all of the family, friends and community members who supported her in this journey.
