Show S.S. School News PAGE B4 MAY 30, 2008 Summit County News Students Learn About The Dangers of Drinking and Driving BY SCOTT NAGLE, S.S. Fire Department South Summit High School students were invited to an auto- mobile accident scene in front of the high school. The 2008 SSHS Docudrama took place on May 15 at 9 a.m. in the west parking lot of the high school. The docudrama was organized by Scott Nagle of the South Summit Fire Protection District along with the assistance from Randy Scott of Air Med, Terry Davis from South Summit Ambulance, Officer Smith from the Kamas police Dept., Deputy Vernon from Summit County Office, Trooper Sheriff’s Brenchley from the Utah Highway Patrol, Lyndsi Marshall from the Summit County Health Dept., Dr. Casey Jowers from IHC, Alan Siddoway from the State Medical Examiner’s Office, Nick Wolf for the use of his automobiles, Mr. Draper, Drama Teacher from SSHS and the wonderful students from Mr. Draper’s Drama Club. The docudrama was a mock alcohol-related crash which illustrated the realities and consequences of drinking while intoxicated as well as not wearing your seatbelts. Students not involved in the crash, witnessed the scene and the responses of emergency care providers and law enforcement officials. After the reenactment, a fol- low-up session took place in the auditorium where students listened to responder’s first hand testimonies of actual accidents that they have witnessed. Each student was given a squeezable light bulb as reminder to think before getting behind the wheel of any vehicle. I would like to personally thank all those involved for their time and dedication in making this event an enormous success for the students of SSHS. Business Lab Gets New FFA End of The Year Activity! Student-Built Computers On Friday, May 9, several South Summit High School students got an opportunity to participate in building 30 new computers for the business lab. Starting with empty computer cases and lots of components, students were able to assemble them all together to have a working state-of-the-art computer. Under the guidance and supervision of their teacher, Mrs. Wilde, students successfully installed the power supply, moth- erboard, DVD, RAM, hard drive, graphics card, etc. For the students, this was an opportunity which will long be remembered as one of the most unique experiences in their high school education. At first students were a little hesitant to work with the components because they were afraid that they might break something. Their confidence grew as the computer began to take shape. Connecting all of the cables was a little confusing but with assistance from Sean at TechLogic, students were able to correctly plug cables into the appropriate places. “I can do this,” and “Oh, that’s how this goes,” were a few of the comments heard. The chance for the “handson” educational experience followed by the pizza lunch was greatly appreciated by the students. Way to go, students! Discovery Properties Presents Scholarship Discovery Properties presented a $500 scholarship to South Summit High School’s Katie Neff at the end of year scholarship assembly on May 15. Seniors were invited to submit an essay on the “Teacher who Inspired Me Most.” Six students submitted essays on how teachers had been an inspiration to them, both in and out of the classroom. The decision this year was particularly difficult since all six students and their essays were so outstanding. Student essays gave tributes to teachers Chip Hayes (Middle School History); Billie Sue McNeil (Ed-Net college courses); Ryan McArthur (high school Spanish), and Kena Rydalch (high school English). Katie described how Mrs. Rydalch made time to help and support her in all her individual efforts, not just in English. Each nominated teacher was given a Gateway Gift Certificate. Discovery Properties is a locally owned business with nine real estate agents who live in the area and like to support Summit County community events as well as its students. On May 22 of 2008 the kids got together in class and had a lunch in for animal science and the year-end activity. Some students supplied barbecues while Mr. Aplanalp supplied the meat and drinks. The students got to try many different varieties of meat. We tried pork, lamp, beef and more different varieties. We made it fun and had some fun and funny moments that will last with us for forever. We would just like to thank the people that came and participated in the activity. We would also like to thank the students and Mr. Aplanalp for supplying everything for this grand activity to happen. Thanks once again! |
