Summit Today H69 L41 Sunny Saturday H76 L45 Mostly Sunny Sunday H77 L46 Mostly Sunny Monday H74 L46 Partly Cloudy CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor “Special Enforcement Outfit Day” - described the day’s events according to UHP Sgt. Loveland, who was the one in charge of the drug search scheduled on May 23, along the I-80 route from Echo to Evanston, both East and Westbound. Approximately sixteen officers from the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP), Morgan County Sheriff’s Department K9 Unit Christian Peay, and several of the Summit County Sheriff’s Department deputies, as well as the State Bureau of Investigation officers - met Friday morning at the Echo Information Center parking lot to receive their orders for policing the vehicles traveling both east and westbound to and from Evanston. This special enforcement was conducted last year very successfully, (entitled “roadblock, no roadblock”), and it was hoped that this day’s efforts would bring in the same results. The morning began with pulling suspicious vehicles no- ticed by officers who had rolled down all of their windows to air out the inside to alleviate drug odors, or who tried to make a quick turn-around in the center median, which is also against the law. Some cars would try to throw out the evidence, but only to be apprehended by the safety officers either up or down the road. They all drew attention to themselves in one way or another, and officers were alerted by radio. At around 10 a.m., the first large find was pulled over. This vehicle was carrying $500 worth of marijuana in a plastic bag, as well as 4 joints and a grinder used to grind the marijuana to use for smoking. The bag was sandwich size, and the clusters of marijuana were of some of the best quality (grown indoors) with a high THC. This type of marijuana - sensei - is grown without seeds, which increases potency - 2530%. K-9 Deputy Brian Cunningham of the Summit County Sheriff’s Department put his dog to work, and he quickly found the “stash” as the odor was very strong in the vehicle and the dog was getting extremely excited with the find. The ABF Truck was seen coming around the bend, near the exit for the Port of Entry westbound from Evanston, and his two-trailer, tractor slammed on the brakes doing a complete 180 turn to land on its side on the shoulder of the freeway. Some witness did not even see the small car also involved, and were very surprised to learn that it was possibly the car with a single driver was pinned under the front trailer, nearly crunched to unrecognizable, could have been at fault. A short time later Trooper Cade Brenchley also saw a black vehicle trying to cut in and out of lanes dodging police, crossing over quickly side to side and when stopped, stated that they were just “sleepy”. A good sized stash of drugs was found in their vehicle stuffed into a medium sized duffle bag with approximately 1 ½ pounds of marijuana, again the type with high potency. The apprehended suspect said “…he had just paid $6,300 for it.” A set of brass knuckles and a glass container located in the door with cork lid with 4-6 clusters of marijuana and a pipe for smoking it was also located. There was a hand-held bag vacuum to suck the air out of the bags as they divided the weed into for selling purposes in the duffle bag, too. These two men were also taken to the Summit County Jail until further notice. There were several citations given for vehicles pulled over as suspicious who were carrying personal drugs in their possession. In a normal single pullover, they would have also been ar- rested, but as the special project only scheduled for Friday and all of the officers needed to remain on site for further vehicle checking. Just giving these people the citation would eventually bring them to court to let the judges handle their cases.
