FFA REPORTER: JANESSA POTTER On May 14, the year end banquet came for FFA members but, as the year end banquet came, many of us started to think what we would do without our great Advisor Mr. David Aplanalp. Mr. Aplanalp has served over 30 years as an agricultural teacher, an Advisor of South Summit FFA, and Biology teacher. At the year of the end banquet, he gave us his retiring address and a great one it was. Many others made slide shows to show his hard work and great effort to put into FFA after the 30 years of devotion he put into and inspiration he gave to all of us past and current students. Many old students of his came to see his retiring address as well to support him. Thank you Mr. Aplanalp for everything you have done for so many others and us and we all appreciate you and devotion to FFA. As the night started out, the Vice President Riata Mitchell gave her retiring address as well as the President J.R. McRay. Many Green Hand Degree awards were handed out and the Star Green Hand went to McKenna Woolstenhulme. The Chapter FFA Degrees got handed to many FFA members as well but the Chapter Farmer award went to Kendell Wilde. The State Degrees went to Ashley Clegg, Lachelle Lewis, Josh Blazzard and Amberlee Page. The State Judging teams got awarded as well. The Horse Judging Team was Lachelle Lewis, Riata Mitchell, Nicole Baliee Sizemore, Lucas, McKenna Woolstenhulme and Janessa Potter. The Dairy Cattle Team was J.R. McRay and Colton Crystal. The Ag. Mechanics team was Lane Thompson, Ben Holton, Tyrel Crystal and JD Holbrook. The Parley Pro Team, the creed winners, Job Interview winner, the Prepared Public Speaking winner, the Extemporaneous Speaking winners, and the Proficiency Award winners all got Recognition. With all that happened that night, we still got new officers. I am proud to present President, Lachelle Lewis; Co-Vice President, Josh Blazzard, and Co-Vice President, JD Holbrook; Secretary, Kendell Wilde; Treasurer, McKenna Woolstenhulme; Reporter as Janessa Potter, and Sentinel as Kyle Niesporek. Congratulations to the new officer team of FFA. This is our new FFA officer team of 200809. We all would just like to thank the middle school for letting us use their cafeteria to represent the year end banquet, the help for everyone that put this banquet together, Miz McNeil for the great dinner she put on, Mr. Aplanalp’s retiring remarks, the old officers, and everyone that came. Thank you to all once again. Rodeo Team Results REPORTER: BAILEE SIZEMORE On May 16 and 17, the South Summit Rodeo Team traveled the short distance to Heber for the Wasatch Rodeo and to Morgan for the Morgan Rodeo. Harley Atkinson split fourth and fifth in the Bareback Bronc event. Dillon Hoffman and Rhett Anderson won the Team roping event. K.C. Fryer had a great evening on Saturday and placed third in the Calf roping event and fifth in the Steer Wrestling. In Heber Bailee Sizemore placed fourth in the Queen Contest, Trevor Rydalch placed eighth in the Boys Cutting. Sarah Slusher placed fifth in the girls cutting event on her new horse. K.C. Starting off the season against top Region 14 team, St. Joe, the Wildcats beat them 1-0 proclaiming a new era had started. The boys felt assured that the season would prove to be one of open possibilities, even a state playoff entry. But due to several injuries, including Kaleb Crittenden (Varsity defensive stopper), and Zach Taylor (Varsity defensive sweep), the impressive start suddenly turned into a rocky uphill battle. The Wildcats’ only other victory during the season came from Layton Christian, a team that beat the Cats out in last year’s playoff first round. Every match after Layton Christian resulted in the same score: close but no cigar. The Wildcats lost several of the next five matches only by one goal. By virtue of winning at least two matches, a key one being that against St. Joe, the Wildcats were allowed a playoff chance. Their first round match pit them Go Classifieds! It Pays! 336-5501 against 1A top seed Mt. Vernon. Casey Lundgreen and J.T. Adlard each scored to lead the Wildcats to a first round-upset over Mount Vernon. The quarterfinals games set South Summit against number four seed Wasatch Academy. The Wildcats had lost the two previous matches against Wasatch Academy 5-2. This playoff game ended differently. The Wildcats notched three goals in the second half to advance to the semifinals where they would meet St. Joseph. South Summit played St. Joe at Timpview High School on May 9. The Wildcats had all the momentum in the first half scoring a goal. At half, the score was 1-0 for South Summit. The second half proved to be a little more challenging. South Summit scored again in first 9 minutes of the second half marching the lead to 2-0 for the Wildcats. But the effort of the Wildcats began to falter. St. Joe scored four minutes later with adding a goal of their own to the score: 21. St. Joe continued their relent- less attack and found 2 more goals – the final goal going in with several minutes left on the clock. South Summit had every advantage and opportunity to score, but nothing went in. St. Joseph scored three times in the last 20 minutes to comefrom-behind in thrilling fashion. It was hardly a flawless performance by the Jayhawks, but they did just enough to survive a phenomenal collective performance by South Summit. Coach Derek Tate, of the St. Joseph Jayhawks, commented to Coach Ryan McArthur, “You guys beat us. We just got lucky.” At the end of the impressive season, the Wildcats marked their way into the South Summit record books as the first boys’ soccer team to arrive at the semi-finals. Two players received top honors. Zach Taylor was selected to be on the All-Region 1st team, and Kaleb Crittenden was selected to be on the AllRegion 2nd team. The Wildcats will lose only three seniors for the next year. |
