Dear Patrons of South Summit School District: I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Enrollment Capacity Committee for their work regarding the restoration of the middle school and relieving the crowded conditions at the elementary school. Board Member Matt Flinders chaired the committee while the following individuals served on the committee; Jeannie Crittenden, Suzanne Prince, Alan Whitmore, Shari Angell, Deby Anderson, Cindy Butterfield, Virginia Cunningham, Louise Willoughby, and Wade Woolstenhulme. The committee took their responsibility very seriously as they researched and explored various options for serving our students needs. After a month of work they were prepared to present five options to the Board of Education. Options presented included moving the kindergarten and head start programs to the middle school, building a new elementary school, keeping the current schools in place, year round schooling, and moving the fifth grade to the elementary. Individual members of the committee presented arguments for and against each proposal to the board in a power point presentation. At the end of their presentation the committee made a final recommendation on which proposal would be best for the district at this time. The committees recommendation was to add classrooms onto the middle school and move the fifth grade to the middle school when construction was complete. The board then took their recommendation under consideration and voted to move ahead with adding a fifth grade area onto the middle school. Oakland Construction was approved as the building contractor for this project. Demolition of the damaged portions of the middle school will begin as quickly as possible with an anticipated completion date of August 2009. It is anticipated that the fifth grade will be moving to the middle school at the beginning of the 2009 – 2010 school year. Once again South Summit School Board thanks the members of this committee for their dedicated work.
