School News Page B2 The Summit County Bee January 25, 2008 Katie Silcox is Teacher of The Year 2008 CHERYL OVARD Bee Editor North Summit Over S.S. - 49-37 Congratulations to the North Summit Girls Basketball Team on Tuesday, Jan. 22, as they played against the South Summit Girls Basketball Team and topped them off with a score of 49-37. The girls are on their way with several wins now toward the State Games. High scorers for the team were Donaldson with 12, Stephens with 11, and Brown with 12. The UACTE, an association for all teachers who teach courses related to Career and Technical Training in agriculture, business, marketing, trades, etc. has been recognized by them as “Teacher of The Year”. They recognize teachers who have made a significant contribution towards innovative, unique and novel programs that serve to improve and promote career and technical education. The teacher must be employed as a full-time classroom/laboratory instructor and contributions must have been made within the last ten years. Ms. Silcox is also an active member of ACTE, another prerequisite. Katie was announced the recipient of this award as “…an Agricultural Education teacher at North Summit High School, and an active teacher since she began in 1998. She has been a member of UACTE and ACTE for the past ten years. She has attended various state and national conferences where she has presented material regarding Agricultural Education. Katie has also had the opportunity to serve on the UACTE board from 2006-2008. She is very active in her community, as well. She has had the opportunity to participate in the 4-H volunteer program and has been recognized as a “Volunteer of The Year” in 4-H. She coordinates the “Sub for Santa” program at NSHS and currently serves on the Summit County Fair Board. It is teachers like Katie Silcox that make our schools and our career and technical education programs successful.” Katie and her husband, Shawn Silcox, and 1-year old son, “JW”, reside in Henefer. Congratulations to a teacher who is looked up to and admired by both her co-workers and her students! Career and technical educations covers a variety of challenges in the field – including those areas which are constantly evolving with our ever-changing global economy. It students in the high school take at least one career and technical education course, and one in four take three or more courses in a single program area. Blood Drive a Success These classes cover areas in careers which may require anywhere from high school and postsecondary certificates to two and four-year college degrees. The ACTE is the nation’s largest education association dedicated to the advancement of education which prepares the youth and adults for their success in their careers. Sophia Stephens and Jill Morrill take it down. STUDENT WRITER: ASHLIN OLSEN On Jan. 18, the North Summit High Sterling Scholars hosted their annual blood drive in the West Wing gym. The blood drive was administered by the Red Cross and was held from 9 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon. Many students, community members, and faculty gave blood. The Red Cross collected 37 pints of blood and the Sterling Scholars were able to meet their goal. “This is a great opportunity for the kids to give back to the community,” commented school councilor and Sterling Scholar adviser Rhonda Butcher. “I’m so proud of everyone that donated and their willingness to give life to someone in need.” The Sterling Scholars would like to thank everyone for their support in making this blood drive a success. Thank you! Monday, Jan. 14, North Summit’s FFA Chapter loaded the bus and headed for Park City Mountain Resort to go ice skating for the night. The students had a blast skating and sliding on the ice with their fellow FFA members. After ice skating, the members were taken to Park City’s own Pizza Hut where the students indulged in some remarkable pizza and breadsticks. We would like to thank the ice skating rink for staying open late for us to have fun, Pizza Hut for provided the notable food and all the members who joined us.
